The artwork is so morbidly colorful. The story adds a somewhat new twist,but predictable all the same. I still enjoyed it nevertheless. A short but very fascinating read. ( )

A fascinating retelling done well by Gaiman (as one might expect) combined with the beautiful yet haunting artwork Colleen Doran. The artwork really brings the story to life, and lends to its horror elements well. ( )

A retelling of the Snow White story through the viewpoint of the Queen.
Like All Things Gaiman, this was wonderful. Such an imaginative twist to the originals and so beautifully told. ( )

This is the story of Snow White, from the viewpoint of the Wicked Queen, who may not be so wicked after all. It's also beautifully illustrated by Colleen Doran. (I don't have to tell you what a great storyteller Neil Gaiman is.)

The Queen is a witch, and did use her powers to help win the heart of the handsome knight who is the king. She doesn't meet her new stepdaughter immediately, but when she does, she sees black, black hair, red, red lips, and skin too white to be natural. They do not take to each other.

But one evening, her stepdaughter comes to her rooms, and seems to want affection. It's from this point that the story twists in a very unexpected direction. All the set-pieces of the familiar story are there, but this isn't the familiar story.

It's beautifully drawn, and beautifully written, and carries you to unexpected places.

Borrowed from a friend and read during Dewey's 24 hour Readathon, I had forgotten that this was based on a short story that I had already read many years ago, which took some of the oomph out of this story for me.

Start with the observation that the way Snow White's description is written makes her sound... not quite... human, reimagine her as a monster, and suddenly the wicked stepmother may be the only sane character in the story. The illustrations were fun, and this was a lovely edition. ( )
