This book would be good for intermediate readers. It is about a family reunion/ memorial. It reveals a lot about African American culture. The boy leaves with a deeper appreciation and connection to where his family came from. ( )

A great book that gives us knowledge about African American history. I love how it introduces information in the form of a story told by a child’s father so that kids can relate to it. I would teach this in social studies/history to show students the strength of African Americans throughout history. ( )

This book is about a family reunion. This family drives down to their grannies house where all of the uncles, cousins, aunts, brothers, and parents are. Every reunion the cousins perform something for their grannie. Alan had no idea what to perform and so he thought and thought and still had nothing. He thinks throughout the tractor ride and dinner with the family but still has nothing until his daddy tells him about a memory when he was younger. That gave Alan the idea to perform memories that his family has told him during his life. Everyone applauded and loved it. This book was really good. It showed a piece of african americans past about slaved and i think that is really important for students to know about. It was cute and the illustrations were a great display towards the words that were written. ( )

"Going Down Home With Daddy" is a book about Lil Alan and his family going home for a family reunion to honor their family history. The reunion happens every year at Lil Alan's Grandma's house. This book shows the importance of family history and value culture. Lil Alan has to figure out what tribute he wants to perform in front of his family. "Going Down Home With Daddy" connects with readers who celebrate family reunions and cherish their ancestors! ( )

This book is about an African American boy named Lil Allen and his family who go Down Home for a family reunion at Granny’s farm where he will learn about his family’s history and how he can contribute to it. I really enjoyed reading this story because it teaches kids about how a family’s history and that they didn’t make their past a sad story but the positives of it. Now this story cannot relate to every child but for those that can relate to this story, it brings a strong message about where a family has come from and what they can do to contribute to this family. This book would be great to read to students during Black History Month to give a lesson in a new way about African American history without them hearing the same things they have heard for years in the past.
