Not an effective use of your time nor the best way to learn.  Is this how children learn their language skills? No. Enter German Stories for Beginners Vol. 1 :  You will find 10 easy-to-read, engaging, and fun stories that will help you to expand your vocabulary and give you the tools to improve your grasp of the German language. Improve your comprehension, grow your vocabulary and spark your imagination with these ten unconventional German short stories! All stories are written using  vocabulary  that you could  easily use  in your  day-to-day conversations . The stories are written with beginner German learners in mind. With that said, it is highly recommended to have a basic understanding of German to achieve maximum enjoyment and effectiveness of the lessons. This program is excellent for those who want to get an introduction to the language or brush up on their German language skills. How to Read German Short Stories for Beginners: Each story contains an important lesson in the German language involving an interesting and entertaining story with realistic dialogues and day-to-day situations. A summary in German and in English of what you just read, both to review the lesson and for you to gauge your comprehension of what the tale was about. At the end of those summaries, you'll be provided with a list of vocabulary found in the lesson, as well as phrases that you may not have understood the first time! Finally, you'll be given clever comprehension questions in German, so you can prove that you learned something in the stories. I got this book as an advance copy through Librarything's Early Review group. I like the concept. The difficulty I had was that their expectation of knowledge of the German language was higher than what I have. Instead of having a handful of words on the page that I didn't know, I was probably closer to one per sentence. As I said, I like the concept, and I am planning on going back through the book when I have more spare time, but that isn't now. ( )

Disclaimer: I received an advance copy from the publisher via LibraryThing.

I'm always looking for new sources of graded readers and other materials for language learners. (This isn't really graded, mind you, because the stories are all more or less the same level of difficulty.) This publisher offers similar books in several languages. I chose German because I wanted to see how much German I remembered from my one-semester intensive course in undergraduate days.

This is a decent collection of short stories in simple German. Each story has a few words in bold print which are listed in a German-English glossary at the end of the story. Each is also followed by some reading comprehension questions in German and English (the same questions in each language). There's an answer key immediately after the questions. I think it would have been better to have the answers at the back or in a footnote so that you can't accidentally see them.

Also, I don't understand why the font size isn't consistent from story to story. It doesn't matter if you're reading an ebook format, because you can just change the text size, but it's strange.

The content does seem appropriate for beginning German students, and the stories are short enough that you're unlikely to get stuck slogging through a text that's too difficult or boring for you. All in all, it's a nice book that delivers what it promises. I wish they had more languages available, particularly "smaller" languages.

Enjoyable book and a great way to review my high school and college German, but many words familiar to me were defined, while some I was completely unfamiliar with were not. A curious choice. Never-the-less, I found it useful and a painless way to get back into the language. ( )

The basic format is to present a short story, with key vocabulary in bold. This is followed by a glossary of the bolded terms, and a summary of the story, in German and in English, and finally a set of multiple-choice questions, in German and in English.

I think the ideal reader will have already had a year or two of German at the high school level, or a semester of a rigorous university class. So, not a real "beginner." But at the more intermediate level, these stories could be effectively used for sight reading/translation exercises. Less experienced learners can work through the stories with a dictionary and grammatical aid.

The provided vocabulary lists contained many words that any beginner should really already know, such as Stadt and Polizei, while often not glossing more advanced vocabulary like Ohrfeige (a box on the ear, a slap in the face).

The stories predominately deal with children, so will be of less intrinsic interest to adult learners.

(I received an review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.) ( )

The format was interesting but I was not able to make this work for me.
