Hannah Arendt gaat in ‘De vrijheid om vrij te zijn’ nader in op het begrip dat onze cultuur al meer dan tweehonderd jaar hoog in het vaandel draagt: vrijheid. Ze vergelijkt de twee revoluties in de tweede helft van de achttiende eeuw die bepalend waren voor onze opvatting over vrijheid: de geslaagde Amerikaanse (1776) en de mislukte Franse (1789). De Franse Revolutie bleef steken in de bevrijding, de Amerikaanse daarentegen richtte een staatsvorm in waarin de publieke zaak de hoogste prioriteit is. Arendts essay is een voortdurende oproep om ook nu na te denken over vrijheid, en over de gevaren die de vrijheid bedreigen. ‘De vrijheid om vrij te zijn’ werd pas onlangs voor het eerst in Amerika en daarna in Duitsland werd gepubliceerd.
