Lillian and Madison were unlikely roommates and yet inseparable friends at their elite boarding school. Then Lillian had to leave the school unexpectedly in the wake of a scandal and they've barely spoken since. Until now, when Lillian gets a letter from Madison pleading for her help. Madison's twin stepkids are moving in with her family and she wants Lillian to be their carer. However, there's a catch- the twins spontaneously combust when they get agitated, flames igniting from their skin in a startling but beautiful way. Lillian is convinced Madison is pulling her leg, but it's the truth. Thinking of her dead-end life at home, Lillian figures she has nothing to lose. Over the course of one humid, demanding summer, Lillian and the twins learn to trust each other-and stay cool-while also staying out of the way of Madison's buttoned-up politician husband. Surprised by her own ingenuity yet unused to the intense feelings of protectiveness she feels for them, Lillian ultimately begins to accept that she needs these strange children as much as they need her. Couldn't this be the start of the amazing life she'd always hoped for?… (mais)

Quirky, funny, sad. At the same time heart wrenching and heart warming. Narrator is very relatable with her inner conflicts and second guessing. Borderline 4 stars. ( )

This was a great summer read. A light hearted story about two children who spontaneously combust when anxious and upset. They happen to be the children of a Tennessee senator who has his eye on bigger things. His wife, their stepmother, hires a highschool friend to be their governess and keep the children out of the public eye while confirmation hearings are underway for the senator to become Secretary of State.
Lillian, the "governess" once took the fall for Madison (the stepmother) and lost her scholarship to a prestigious school.
The story is about money and privilege contrasted with poverty and common sense. There is also a lot of wisdom about what it means to be a parent and the need to let children be who they are. ( )

I'm not a fan of fantasy or dystopian novels, so a book about children who spontaneously combust would ordinarily not be my jam. But I loved this book. Wilson's depicture of deeply troubled twins who catch fire when they're agitated was so genuine and moving that I totally bought the premise. Who hasn't experienced a child's meltdown that felt combustible? I read several reviews and was surprised that no one (but me) wondered whether the author was making a nod towards the challenges of raising a child who is on the autism spectrum. ( )

Madison and Lillian are best friends and basketball teammates at a prestigious boarding school. Madison is very privileged, and Lillian is a scholarship student, with no father and a troubled mother. When Madison is caught with drugs in her room, Lillian's mother accepts a $10,000 hush payment and Lillian is expelled, after being assured of leniency because of her situation. Years later, Lillian is barely scraping by, when Madison asks for her help. Still in awe/love with Madison, who is now married to a Senator from Tennessee, Lillian is asked to become governess to Madison's to stepchildren. The catch is that they have a rare disorder where they burst into flames when agitated. Lillian is offered more money than she has ever seen, and a small house for the three of them. After a rough start, she bonds with them in a touching way, begins to find meaning in her life, and becomes like a lioness teaching/protecting her cubs. especially when the Senator is tapped to become Secretary of State and wants to send his embarrassing problem away. Recommended. ( )

It was the hard thing about having two jobs: you had to disappoint them at different times and sometimes you lost track of who you'd fucked over worse.
I wasn't destined for greatness; I knew this. But I was figuring out how to steal it from someone stupid enough to relax their grip on it.
She flipped her hair in such a way that it could only have been instinctual, evolution.
"Because you're poor, right? But you're here. You want power, too."
"I just want to go to college, to get out of here," I said, but I felt like maybe she was right. I'd learn to want all that stuff she said. I could go for power.
"I think we'll be friends," she said. "I hope so, at least."
"God," I said, trying to keep my whole body from convulsing, "I hope so, too."
It was such a strange feeling, to hate someone and yet love them at the same time.
