Eventually becoming the Duke of Aldridge's ward while helping to solve murders among the Beau Monde. When a high ranking government military man is found garroted in a vacant church with his tongue cut out & cross-like symbols on his body in invisible ink... Duke of Aldrich & Kendra are called to assist the coroner. It is soon discovered that the man had secrets from wartime Spain & France that he had just become privy to; all tied to Evert Lawson, the son of his former-best friend's whom he was mentoring to be in the Secret Service. Evert Lawson had been reported dead 2 years past, when he had been captured in Spain by the French plebian army and blown up in an explosion & subsequent fire. Next another former military man is murdered in the same manner and a third is targeted, whom Kendra hopes to save, no matter that he is the most culpable of the tree involved in Evert's demise. Well written interesting, compelling & at times funny.... FBI agent Kendra Donovan has been trapped in 1816 England for the last six months, a victim of a disappearing wormhole. Her expertise has been invaluable in catching a number of murderers if with the limitation of today's forensic technology. Her ability to interview witnesses and possible suspects, many members of the British aristocracy, would have been hampered if she was presented as the ward, the Duke of Aldridge, who knows her secret. When the naked, garroted corpse of Sir Giles Holbrooke, former spymaster, is discovered in an abandoned London church with his tongue removed and crosses tattooed in his skin, Bow Street Runner (the predecessor of the police) Sam Kelley is asked to investigate. He requests the assistance of the Duke and, especially, Kendra Donovan. Although this novel follows much of the same pattern of the first three books. Kendra continues to be frustrated by the social rules, especially for females, as she interviews witnesses often requiring the assistance of the Duke to open doors. She also continues to receive marriage requests from Alec, her lover and the Duke's nephew, but is afraid to agree because she fears what impact this action might have on the future. As implausible as I find how Kendra ended up in her current predicament and how easily she has adjusted to be in the past, I still enjoy reading these mysteries. Although you could read this as a standalone, I would recommend you begin with the first in the series, Caught in Time. The read will enjoy how her relationship with a number of the reoccurring characters evolves in the series. sem críticas | adicionar uma crítica

February 1816: A race through the icy, twisting cobblestone streets of London ends inside an abandoned church-and a horrific discovery. Bow Street Runner Sam Kelly is called to investigate the grisly murder of Sir Giles Holbrooke, who was left naked and garroted, with his tongue cut out. Yet as perplexing as that crime is, it becomes even stranger when symbols that resemble crosses mysteriously begin to appear across the dead man's flesh during autopsy. Is it a message from the killer? Sam turns to the one person in the kingdom who he believes can answer that question and solve the bizarre murder-the Duke of Aldridge's odd but brilliant ward, Kendra Donovan. While Kendra has been trying to adapt to her new life in the early nineteenth century, she is eager to use her skills as a twenty-first century FBI agent again. And she will need all her investigative prowess, because Sir Giles was not an average citizen. He was one of England's most clever spymasters, whose life had been filled with intrigue and subterfuge. For the first time, I wish that this didn't include the MC having romance. ( )
