New York Times Best Seller From the National Book Award-winning author of Just Kids and M Train, a profound, beautifully realized memoir in which dreams and reality are vividly woven into a tapestry of one transformative year. Following a run of New Year's concerts at San Francisco's legendary Fillmore, Patti Smith finds herself tramping the coast of Santa Cruz, about to embark on a year of solitary wandering. Unfettered by logic or time, she draws us into her private wonderland with no design, yet heeding signs--including a talking sign that looms above her, prodding and sparring like the Cheshire Cat. In February, a surreal lunar year begins, bringing with it unexpected turns, heightened mischief, and inescapable sorrow. In a stranger's words, "Anything is possible: after all, it's the Year of the Monkey." For Smith--inveterately curious, always exploring, tracking thoughts, writing--the year evolves as one of reckoning with the changes in life's gyre: with loss, aging, and a dramatic shift in the political landscape of America. Smith melds the western landscape with her own dreamscape. Taking us from California to the Arizona desert; to a Kentucky farm as the amanuensis of a friend in crisis; to the hospital room of a valued mentor; and by turns to remembered and imagined places, this haunting memoir blends fact and fiction with poetic mastery. The unexpected happens; grief and disillusionment set in. But as Smith heads toward a new decade in her own life, she offers this balm to the reader: her wisdom, wit, gimlet eye, and above all, a rugged hope for a better world. Riveting, elegant, often humorous, illustrated by Smith's signature Polaroids, Year of the Monkey is a moving and original work, a touchstone for our turbulent times.… (mais)

It was a privilege to travel with Patti Smith as she revisited the year of the monkey and associated times in her life. I started off feeling like a massive groupie but Smith is so open to sharing that soon wore off.

Of course I wandered off on tangents of my own, remembering great bands, tracks, lyrics and books. I have never been to the USA and many of the place names mentioned are almost mythical in my head - Redondo and Venice beaches e.g.- and this kind of added to the dreamlike atmosphere. These places merged for me with the beach in Bolano's Third Reich, a book that is heavily referenced along with 2666. Fitting for me that I read one last year and will read the other this.

The book is illustrated with Smith's atmospheric polaroids.

Indulgently enjoyable. ( )

Oh, I really wanted to love this book but it wasn't anything like I imagined it to be. I adored 'Just Kids' and 'M Train' was just wonderful, they were both life-changing books for me but 'Year of the Monkey' was just too odd (and I like odd!) but this was almost like reading gibberish at times. There were too many vague references and I felt like she was trying to be a bit like Murakami weaving dreams into reality but I don't think that works when you're writing a memoir, as I had a hard time deciphering what was real and what wasn't. It was all over the place and at times just didn't make sense :( Ahhhhh, I really wanted to love this but I just didn't and I'm sad. Really sad. I'm sorry Patti :( ( )

2016 becomes a surreal collage of travel memoir, a mix of poetry, fiction and images starting with a dialog between the author and a hotel billboard when The Dream Inn challenges her to dream. Poignantly the dreams are interrupted by the deaths of her friends playwright Tom Stoppard and Sandy Pearlman, producer and lyricist for the rock group Blue Öyster Cult. ( )
