In a peaceful retirement village, four unlikely friends meet weekly in the Jigsaw Room to discuss unsolved crimes; together they call themselves The Thursday Murder Club. There's Red Ron, the infamous former socialist firebrand, still causing trouble; gentle Joyce, widowed, pining for another resident, but surely not as innocent as she seems; Ibrahim, a former therapist who understands the darker side of human nature; and Elizabeth? Well, no one is quite sure who she really is, but she's definitely not a woman to underestimate. When a local developer is found dead, the Thursday Murder Club suddenly find themselves in the middle of their first live case. The friends might be septuagenarians, but they are cleverer than most. Can our unorthodox but brilliant gang catch the killer before its too late?… (mais)

Old people making life more tolerable by investigating old police files. Strong friendships and a lot of luck. Set in Kent, mostly real towns but also in the fictional seaside town of Fairhaven. ( )

The most fun ever in a murder mystery; a cleverly convoluted plot. Clues, red herrings, smiles and empathy throughout. ( )

The Thursday Murder Club is a mystery novel, and also about four friends enjoying life in a retirement village. Partially told in the form of first-person diary entries and partially in a rotating third person perspective that includes a wide cast of characters, it's made up of over a hundred short chapters.

To me, it felt like it took a while to get going, at least with the mystery plotline. There's a certain amount of setup, but also just a sense that the book is taking its time. Even after the murder happens, the pacing never feels rapid, and plenty of breaks are taken to show the retirees sharing a bottle of wine or dip into the backstory of the police detective or show what side characters who may or may not be suspects are up to. In part, this serves to provide some smoke screens and red herrings and to keep the reader guessing. In part, it keeps the tone light-hearted and occasionally humorous.

But I also noticed after a while that these sections often served the purpose of reminding the reader of things that had already been revealed. Remember: this is when the murder was committed. Remember: these are the current suspects. This extended even to character details, where I felt as though I was constantly being fed details to remind me that this character is a really bad person or that this character secretly likes that one but doesn't want to admit it or that yet another character is unhappy with their life and struggling to lose weight. In fact, I began to wonder if this book, while certainly appealing to a wide audience, might also be considering readers who are the same age as the characters. I especially wondered this after a diary entry that explains what Tinder is and how it works. Many sections dealing with technology especially seem to be written to give younger audiences a laugh while allowing the elderly characters to ask for explanations or to carry on ignoring what they don't understand.

Personally, I would have preferred a more streamlined book, but it occurs to me that this style may suit a lot of readers. For example, it may be perfect for someone who doesn't have a lot of time to read and is forced to go long periods between chapters.

Really my biggest sticking point relates to the portrayal of one particular character, who is repeatedly described to be wearing a "dog collar". The first time I read this, it confused me greatly, since I was picturing a punk-style accessory, and that really didn't strike me as the thing a typical priest would wear. None of the dozens I've seen in my life would fit that image, anyway. It took me a while to realize this must be some kind of British slang for Roman collar, the white collar typically worn with a black shirt. I've also heard it called a clerical collar, but the slang immediately struck me as offensive. I've since tried to do some research and found one commenter on a particular site who claims this is the standard wording in British English and it's not pejorative, but I also saw a commentor who claims this is an Anglican term rather than a Catholic one and expresses the opinion that it would be less offensive to use another term. I wasn't able to find any official opinions on the subject. If the term is used in a respectful way by British Catholics and it would sound strange to them to use a more formal one, I'll be happy to apologize for my ignorance. But I highly suspect American Catholics, in particular older (and generally more conservative ones) may have the same reaction I did and probably would also not enjoy where the story ends up going in relation to this character. I didn't find anything inaccurate or blatantly offensive in the portrayal of Catholicism, but I get the feeling that the author's attitude isn't complimentary.

But that's just one portion of the plot. In general, this book provided a mystery with plenty of twists and turns, plenty of suspects coming into focus at different times, and a very well-executed conclusion. In terms of characters, you'll need a taste for the type who aren't afraid to bend the rules and a tolerance for some elderly characters espousing conservative and occasionally prejudiced viewpoints. But they can also be charming and funny and clever. They're generally kind. They take care of the ones they love. And there were certainly moments where I was impressed by their actions and rooting them on. There are also some younger characters who get time in the spotlight and a bit of focus on sexism in the police force, which was presented in the context of a retired officer but also made clear that all problems haven't been resolved in the present.

Overall, this is the type of book you can enjoy reading slowly, perhaps a little bit each day, or get through quickly to find out the solution to the mystery. Since you'll spend a lot of time getting to know its cast of characters, I think the question of whether you'll enjoy it ultimately comes down to whether you find them loveable. Perhaps even relatable. Since it's the first in a series, you're certainly in luck if you do.

A little slow to start, but such an enjoyable, twisty, well developed mystery! ( )

Every Thursday, four residents (Elizabeth, Ron, Ibrahim and Joyce) of a very nice retirement village enjoy discussing unsolved crimes. Their former careers allow them the experience to do so. Joyce is a newer member of the club as she replaces Penny, who is now comatose. Elizabeth has access to Penny’s paper files and makes good use of them but she is also resourceful at getting the information she needs/wants.

When a developer for nearby properties is found murdered, the foursome had already met a young female cop named Donna as Donna had given them a talk on the fine points of crime. Donna and her boss, Chris, along with the Thursday Murder Club are both trying to solve this crime.

This is a fun story and what I enjoyed the most were the characters. It was a bit slow at times but the Thursday Murder Club members make up for that ( )

After a certain age, you can pretty much do whatever takes your fancy. No one tells you off, except for your doctors and your children.
"Some people love their children more than they love their partner," says Ibrahim, "and some people love their partner more than their children. And no one can ever admit to either thing."
Elizabeth can see Chris Hudson now, fresh off the plane, she guessed, running as best he can. She gives him a friendly wave and sees the relief on his face—both that she is still alive and that he can now stop running.
People love a murder, whatever they might say in public. (23)
I try to be honest where I can, so I hope you don’t mind me saying I don’t like him (Ian.)  He’s all the things that can go wrong with a man if you leave him to his own devices.
