This was my very first comic book ever and I am so happy with it!
I definitely didn't regret picking this one up!
The characters were well drawn and interesting to look at and it was so pleasing to look at the pages and drawings and colors!
The story is interesting, I like where this is going and it's so good to see where Fitchner comes from and what he's been through, especially that I already know what happens to him afterwards.

The part where he had that flashback just ripped my heart out, it actually makes perfect sense that he revolted and wanted to tear that society apart. They treated him like shit!! ( )

I would highly recommend reading this after you have read the Red Rising series. Although this is a prequel, it really expects you to know the Red Rising world in order to understand its implications. This is the story of how Ares becomes the face of the rebellion.

I really liked the art used here. It wasn't as beautiful as some other graphic novels I've read, like Monstress by Marjorie Liu, but it was interesting and worked for the story being told. I loved how the text boxes were different colours depending on who was speaking: if it was a gold, the box would be gold, if it was a red or a green, it would be their affiliated colour. Not only did it serve as a reminder of the distinction between the different classes that are part of the world created in the series, it also helped the reader keep track of who was talking.

I really liked the backstory that was given for Ares. However, I don't think this comic really added to the story. There was nothing really knew here that I wouldn't have gotten from the story and the theme was the same one as in the series. I understand that the theme being the same was a unifying factor but there weren't even subtle nuances to give it some depth. It was also too short to have the detailed back story to the rebellion that I was looking for.

Overall, this was an interesting medium to portray the series, but it wasn't unique enough for me. I'm giving it a 3/5 for creativity and artwork.

Thank you to Edelweiss for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.

I think that it was a guaranteed 5 stars with me for this. [a:Pierce Brown|6474348|Pierce Brown|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1417558860p2/6474348.jpg] has something with this series that is electrifying. It has a rhythm that beats in syncopation with the hearts and minds of all those searching for equality, freedom of choice and fighting back against persecution of any kind. By putting this prequel series in a different medium, he's accomplished something that can be incredibly difficult and this first edition was GLORIOUS!

I think this was probably the best representation, to bring the story to comics instead of an ordinary prequel novel (because prequels usually leave something to be desired). This does NOT! It's not clean, Golden coloured richness - it's gritty, just like you'd expect Fitchner's history to be but the artwork is beautiful and very fitting for the themes. I cannot wait for more! We're off to a great start learning just why Fitchner became who he was for Darrow and how he was as Ares and more importantly it reinforced the similarities with Sevro (and I love Sevro and would protect him with my life!

Five stars for this fantastic start to the Sons of Ares prequel series! ( )
