Radiohead is simultaneously one of the most experimental and most successful rock bands on the planet. While their lyrics rarely reference religion, in this book Robert Saler argues that the discipline of Christian theology has a great deal to learn from the band when it comes to unflinching engagement with the world's brokenness and its longing for redemption. Market dynamics, the influence of capitalism on art, ecological theology, aesthetics, and Christology all come together as Saler asks what it might mean for Radiohead to "soundtrack" a theology of defiance against the forces that create death in our daily lives. Review of the Cascade Books paperback (2019)
I was interested in this book more through association than through actual knowledge or appreciation of the music group Radiohead which I am only peripherally aware of. I think I came across them at first through guitarist Jonny Greenwood's score for the film There Will Be Blood (2007) and the Scala Girls' Choir choral version of their song "Creep" used in the trailer for the film The Social Network (2010). Then the "Creep" cover by Carrie Manolakos filmed at NYC's Le Poisson Rouge in 2012 was also a standout. Based on the above exposure I did actually collect a string of their CDs (The Bends, OK Computer, Kid A, Hail to the Thief, In Rainbows) but I have to confess that I maybe only listened to them once and did not feel any strong attraction to ever going to see and hear them in concert.
