"Fiendish good fun." -- Anthony Horowitz From the hugely talented author of Before She Knew Him comes a chilling tale of psychological suspense and an homage to the thriller genre tailor-made for fans: the story of a bookseller who finds himself at the center of an FBI investigation because a very clever killer has started using his list of fiction's most ingenious murders. Years ago, bookseller and mystery aficionado Malcolm Kershaw compiled a list of the genre's most unsolvable murders, those that are almost impossible to crack--which he titled "Eight Perfect Murders"--chosen from among the best of the best including Agatha Christie's A. B. C. Murders, Patricia Highsmith's Strangers on a Train, Ira Levin's Death Trap, A. A. Milne's Red House Mystery, Anthony Berkeley Cox's Malice Aforethought, James M. Cain's Double Indemnity, John D. Macdonald's The Drowner, and Donna Tartt's A Secret History. But no one is more surprised than Mal, now the owner of the Old Devils Bookshop in Boston, when an FBI agent comes knocking on his door one snowy day in February. She's looking for information about a series of unsolved murders that look eerily similar to the killings on Mal's old list. And the FBI agent isn't the only one interested in this bookseller who spends almost every night at home reading. There is killer is out there, watching his every move--a diabolical threat who knows way too much about Mal's personal history, especially the secrets he's never told anyone, even his recently deceased wife. To protect himself, Mal begins looking into possible suspects . . . and sees a killer in everyone around him. But Mal doesn't count on the investigation leaving a trail of death in its wake. Suddenly, a series of shocking twists leaves more victims dead--and the noose around Mal's neck grows so tight he might never escape.… (mais)

overall a decent book. started off compelling enough and definitely an excellent premise, though once you get in to it a bit its a bit predictable if you know these stories well. That being said, I did enjoy reading it even after I knew what was likely to happen. I'd definitely read it again someday ( )

Not sure what to think about this book. It's not in my normal reading tastes. I was trying to branch out and try something new.
I really wanted to like it and it was ok, but not what I was expecting. I guess I was expecting more suspense, more mystery. I felt like most of book rambled and I figured out the ending before I was half way through the book. There was one little catch at the end I didn't expect, so that was good. I did have to force myself to finish it. It just wasn't holding my attention the way other murder mystery/suspense had.
I was excited about the book lists he included, but was extremely disappointed when he gave away almost all of the endings in each book. I expected to have spoilers on a couple of the books as the murder already competed a couple of them, but a majority of them. Now, I don't want to even try the list he gave. ( )

This one started out amazing and had me caught up in the story quickly. But at some point, it seemed to really slow down and I began to feel a bit bored and feel a bit like this story has been done so many times. Keeping with it though, they were definitely a few different surprises along the way.
The premise sounds amazing. Set in a bookstore, the owner suddenly becomes the object of the FBI’s attention due to a list he wrote years ago where he listed books that he considered to have committed the perfect murder fictionally. It appears that somebody is using this list to commit real life murders.
But somewhere along the line, my attention wandered. This seems to be a theme with me and this author. I either love the book or I just can’t get into it. 3.5 ⭐️’s ( )

There must be a sub genre of mysteries with a writer or book collector as narrator. This was well done and I felt I was listening to a true story. The winter scenes were amusing as I am in Florida.
Although there were quite a few characters keeping track wasn’t a challenge.
I was reminded of Otto Penzler’s mysterious book store. Of course o don’t think of him as capable of violence. ( )

This one held my attention, but to be honest, I liked the idea of the plot better than his execution of it. The story was fast-paced, but parts fell a little flat for me. I didn’t care for any of the characters and was looking for a twist that would knock my socks off, which didn’t happen, and I found the ending underwhelming. I would recommend it, but be warned that there are spoilers for more books than just those with the 8 ‘perfect murders ( )
