Introducing the astonishing, the unforgettable ... HOUDINI! He made himself a living legend and became the most famous name in magic. But Harry Houdini, like his acts, was fascinating and mysterious. As a child, he was often on the edge of homelessness, so he would charge crowds to watch him perform tricks he knew no one else could do. After leaving home to seek his fortune, Houdini mastered every form of magic available-- card tricks, juggling, illusions-- and travelled the world over to make a name for himself. But true stardom came to him only when he began to focus his act around daring, heart-stopping escapes. By sheer force of will, Houdini trained his body to withstand the torturous demands of the elaborate acts he created. How did he do it? Magicians never tell. Yet acclaimed author Kathleen Krull and award-winning illustrator Eric Velasquez combine their talents to reveal the remarkable story of the World's Greatest Mystery Man and Escape King.… (mais)

The story and mystery of Harry Houdini. His life was much as mystery and his shows. The author draws on what is known of this mysterious performer and his journey from humble beginnings to fame and fortune.

Students will be interested in this biography because it is about Houdini. However, the biography itself is not really special. It could be good for a research project, or a history lesson ( )

Students are sure to be interested and engaged when reading this book! Unlike the typical biography on presidents or famous generals, this one is on the escape artist, Houdini. Many kids may already be familiar with his name and what he did but this book includes a lot more interesting information in an organized and easy to read way. After reading this out loud as a class we could incorporate geometry into a 3rd or 4th grade room by making a series of shapes that he would have to scape through. After drawing our pictures, we could name all of the shapes, triangle, in the older grades- what type of triangle? What is the 5 sided figure you drew and so on. After we can draw a maze in another color or a list of step by step directions on how we think he might have escaped. This is a good way to practice our creativity, writing skills, math terms and strategical thinking. ( )

I like the way that this biography is written. Every few pages, there's a magic trick that's "performed" for the reader, and it makes the reading much more interesting. Also, because he's a magician, it's fascinating to learn about some of the tricks he had to escaping things. This is definitely a great introduction to biographies for children.

This story describes the life of Houdini, nee Eric Weiss, and his rise to fame. It says a little about different elements of his life from childhood to death and has pages dedicated to the tricks he performed. These tricks are described in poems and accompanied by illustrations. The information presented was interesting but could have been more detailed or contain more excitement. I did not feel compelled by the writing as I feel I should reading the history of one of the most famous magicians of all time. I did like the historical element of the pages with the tricks. They contained dates and occurrences that were compelling. ( )
