BB takes on the hysterics of markets as well as the nonprofit-industrial complex, particularly cynical application of spirituality and morality in service of continued exploitation of labor, complete with clownish, pious, self-serving, repentant captain of industry named “Mauler.” Not fun to read, which isn’t exactly surprising. ( ) A bit heavy, though I guess I did expect that a bit. I find plays hard to read as I'm constantly trying to picture how my perceptions would change if I were seeing it staged so I'm a poor judge of their literary quality in the print form. This explores similar territory as Upton Sinclair's "The Jungle" (the Chicago stockyards, workers' rights, need for organization, etc.) but it brings in the theme of a sacrificial lamb who tries to provide for the workers only to be stymied by the investors/owners (hence, St. Joan). This is a great over-simplification of the theme and plot but I didn't feel like analyzing it though it certainly deserves that treatment. sem críticas | adicionar uma crítica

In this version of the story of Joan of Arc, Brecht transforms her into 'Joan Dark', a member of the 'Black Straw Hats' (a Salvation Army-like group) in twentieth century Chicago. The play charts Joan's battle with Pierpont Mauler, the unctuous owner of a meat-packing plant. Like her predecessor, Joan is a doomed woman, a martyr and (initially, at least) an innocent in a world of strike-breakers, fat cats, and penniless workers. Like many of Brecht's plays it is laced with humor and songs as part of its epic dramaturgical structure. The play, which was never staged in Brecht's lifetime, is published here with a new translation, a full introduction and Brecht's own notes on the text.
