Inspired by a terrifying true story from the author's hometown, a heart-pounding novel of suspense about a small Minnesota community where nothing is as quiet--or as safe--as it seems. Cassie McDowell's life in 1980s Minnesota seems perfectly wholesome. She lives on a farm, loves school, and has a crush on the nicest boy in class. Yes, there are her parents' strange parties and their parade of deviant guests, but she's grown accustomed to them. All that changes when someone comes hunting in Lilydale. One by one, local boys go missing. One by one, they return changed--violent, moody, and withdrawn. What happened to them becomes the stuff of shocking rumors. The accusations of who's responsible grow just as wild, and dangerous town secrets start to surface. Then Cassie's own sister undergoes the dark change. If she is to survive, Cassie must find her way in an adult world where every sin is justified, and only the truth is unforgivable.… (mais)

UNSPEAKABLE THINGS. Jess Lourey. 2020. Shades of Quindlen’s Black and Blue! This was a difficult book to read. The story is narrated by Cassie McDowell, a young teenage girl. From the beginning we know that Cassie’s family is about as dysfunctional as it can be. Her alcoholic father is a middle-aged hippie-artist who suffers from PTSD he acquired in Vietnam; her mother a co-dependent enabler. They enjoy throwing mate-swapping parties Although she never spells it out, her father has abused her older sister and the sister and Cassie live in fear that their father will come up the stairs for one of them every night. As if this weren’t enough, boys are being kidnapped and abused. The plot revolves around Cassie’s attempt to find out who is taking the boys and staying away from her father. A sad book. ( )

I liked this author’s writing style, but I felt like the pacing of this book was off. ( )

I listened to this for about an hour and high school drama is just not my thing. It didn't grab me and I tossed it to the curb. Nice try Lourey. ( )

Very good

This was a good read. Although throughout the book it wasn't really clear until just at the end, what kind of monster her Dad was and that wasn't even the point of the book. ( )

Engrossing

The book kept me engaged pretty much the entire time. Told from the point of view of a pre teen, it's well done as you can put yourself into her shoes and not feel this is a young adult story. I, like others, was a bit disappointed with the ending and questions left unanswered, however, it's intriguing enough to be forgiven. I also enjoyed all the retro references. ( )
