Twenty years after the publication of The Quilter's Apprentice, the novel that launched the beloved Elm Creek Quilts series, New York Times bestselling author Jennifer Chiaverini returns with another delightful chapter featuring Master Quilter Sylvia Bergstom Compson and friends, a captivating, heartwarming tale sure to become a holiday favorite.

Just weeks before Christmas, severe wintry weather damages the church hall hosting the Christmas Boutiquean annual sale of handcrafted gifts and baked goods that supports the county food pantry. Determined to save the fundraiser, Sylvia Bergstrom Compson offers to hold the event at Elm Creek Manor, her ancestral family estate and summertime home to Elm Creek Quilt Camp.

In the spirit of the season, Sylvia and the Elm Creek Quilters begin setting up market booths in the ballroom and decking the halls with beautiful hand-made holiday quilts. Each of the quilters chooses a favorite quilt to display, a special creation evoking memories of holidays past and dreams of Christmases yet to come. Sarah, a first-time mother expecting twins, worries if she can handle raising two babies, especially with her husband so often away on business. Cheerful, white-haired Agnes reflects upon a beautiful appliqu quilt she made as a young bride and the mysterious, long-lost antique quilt that inspired it. Empty nesters and occasional rivals Gwen and Diane contemplate family heirlooms and unfinished projects as they look forward to having their children home again for the holidays.

But while the Elm Creek Quilters work tirelessly to make sure the Christmas Boutique happens, it may take a holiday miracle or two to make it the smashing success they want it to be.

Praised for her ability to craft "a wonderful holiday mix of family legacy, reconciliation and shared experiences" (Tucson Citizen), Jennifer Chiaverini once again rings in the festive season with this eagerly awaited addition in her beloved series.

I thought I'd read most of the books in Jennifer Chiaverini's Elm Creek Quilt series. I'm pretty sure I read all of the first seven, even though some of those were done before I started keeping track of my reading in LibraryThing. However, I had a big gap in the middle of the series (numbers 11-15), and had also missed some of the more recent ones. This book is #21 in the series, although chronologically, the events in it happen after those in book #15, The Quilter's Holiday (one I haven't read).

The last book in the series that I read before this one was #20, The Giving Quilt, in December 2012. Despite a gap of over 11 years (Chiaverini had also taken a break - of seven years - between publishing that one and this one), I remembered the main characters from the series, and the book stood alone well.

The premise of the novel is that Elm Creek Manor, business home for the Elm Creek Quilters (and literal home for some of them), agrees to host a fundraising holiday boutique when the church in the nearby town that normally hosts it is unable to do so. Each chapter in the book (except the last) is told from the point of view of a different Elm Creek Quilter - Sylvia, Gretchen, Sarah, Agnes, Gwen, and Diane - as well as a new character, Mary Beth, a next-door neighbor to (and rival of the irritating) Diane.

Much of the book retells stories told in earlier books, but this didn't bother me, since it had been so long since I'd read another book in the series. Also, as another reviewer mentioned, I still learned something new about each character. Agnes' story (that filled in what happened after the death of her first husband, Sylvia's brother) was especially interesting. Mary Beth was an intriguing new character, and I'd like to see her included in any future books in this series. As always, I wished there'd been illustrations of some of the quilts and patterns described. ( )

I thoroughly enjoyed this book! A wonderful book about love and friendship. Sylvia and the Elm Creek Quilters save the Christmas boutique by hosting it at Sylvia's home. The friends all work together to make a magical event take place. A definite must read! ( )

Won this book off Goodreads.

I did not realize that this book was one in a series of books. I found that this could be a stand
alone book and follow the story. The characters are enjoyable and will have you laughing and
crying at times during the story

The story is about a group of ladies who are quilter in a small town.. They come together to
help out another group of quilters to put on a Christmas Boutique for fundraiser when the place
it was to beheld has damage done to it during a snow storm.

This is a story of hurt, forgiveness, and friendship. We also learn some history of quilting and
how quilt patterns are grated. It also show how these ladies come together over looking over
looking a lot of difference in each other that each sees and feels. We are all human with many
flaws in our lives. ( )

This 2019 Christmas installment in the Elm Creek Quilts series shows the quilters preparing for the town's Christmas boutique which benefits the food pantry. Originally scheduled for the church hall, the church sustained water damage due to frozen pipes. It is moved to Sylvia's retreat. A little Christmas reconciliation occurs within the narrative. Each long chapter is told from the perspective of a different woman. The book gave a lot of back story with little forward progress. Still it was a pleasant enough read. The series tends to be quite formulaic. The same story is often repeated. I tired of these a long time ago and got behind on the series. I skipped many intervening installments, but I still felt I had not missed a beat. ( )

I haven't read any of this series.

The chapters were dedicated to multiple characters. I found some of the characters interesting, but the others didn't appeal to me at all. ( )
