Apparently all I can read in year two of the pandemic is Nora Roberts (as opposed to year one which was mostly filled with Pride and Prejudice adaptations...). More recycled characters here..the male lead, Dillon, is the rancher we saw in Come Sundown and a couple other early works about Montana. It's been a long time since we've seen a show business family (Emma in Public Secrets? Or Eve Benedict in Genuine Lies ), but this one is lovely--and Irish!--and it is definitely the first time she has blended Hollywood glamor with the wholesome life on the ranch. And in beautiful Big Sur, CA, no less! Fun and recommended, like all of her long-form mystery romances. ( )

The book started off real well.
A big family. A young girl. Her getting kidnapped, the ransom demand, the great escape, the investigation.
It all looked very promising.
After that, I think the book just went all the way down.
Let me start with the romance. There was practically none. He looked at her when she was 17. He could see her with him, in his place that was it. She is intertwined with his family, meets him a couple of times and they just drift together. No major romance, no build up. It was just completely flat.
The suspense. There was none. Everyone from the reader to all the characters knew who the bad guy was. There was no mystery.
Most Nora Roberts are normally categorised as Romantic Suspense. So here we have a book where there is no suspense except in the first part for a short time, there is a very very bland romance.
Do i have to go any further. I don't think so.
That said. Nora Roberts books are very clean so you don't end up reading some very offensive erotica. Also she knows how to build the characters so they are built ok and quite consistent.
Thumbs down for me but i didn't hate it. Just OK. ( )

Not my usual fare but enjoyable on a hot summer day. Three generations of Irish/California support one another and especially Caitlyn who experiences a kidnapping at age 10. The male romantic lead is quickly identified but it takes Cate decades to recognize this. ( )

On the night 10 year old Cate escaped her kidnappers, she forged a life long bond with the family who helped her and the boy who protected her. It was a bond that Dillion both protected and honored through the years. From a distance, he watched Cate grow up (as did the world) and bided his time until she came home because he knew, always, that she would come home.

Suspenseful reading. Very interesting characters. I just re-read it on Kindle from the library. The only thing I wished was different was that I found the ending a little abrupt. I would have liked a little more closure with the Caitlyn's mother, who reminded me of Donald Trump. And I know this is a little overused but I would have liked to see it end with the wedding. ( )
