Plot Summary: Ellen was interested in a bunch of things as a kid. She started playing flute at 10 yo, and in college she realized she wanted to be a scientist. She kept hearing "no" from people who didn't believe a woman should be involved in science, but she kept going until she found supportive people. Eventually, she became an astronaut then the head of NASA.

Recurring Themes: perseverance, STEM, astronaut, space, science, math, flute

Controversial Issues: none

Personal Thoughts: This rhyming picture book was full of information and showed pride and success in the accomplishments of a women in STEM and space. I really enjoyed hearing about her mom taking 20 years to graduate college because she only took one class at a time. I'm not sure about some of the rhymes but overall it was very well done.

Primary. Excellent biography of Astronaut and scientist, Ellen Ochoa. It follows her story and perseverance until she got to the stars and beyond. Excellent for STEM and Space lessons.

Primary; Biography; This is a great story of Dr. Ellen Ochoa and her journey from a young Mexican girl who was denied many opportunities because of her race and gender to going to space with NASA. This book would be perfect for young girls (and boys) of any race as it inspires the reader to work hard and chase dreams relentlessly despite any resistance. ( )
