This is one of those stories that you know the ending at the beginning, but I was quickly invested in learning how the arrangement stood the test of time for these characters. Mallory Blessing and Jake McCloud are pretty upfront about the Same Time, Next Year vibe the story takes from the very beginning. Jake is a college buddy of Mallory's brother, the serial marriage guy, so when they begin meeting up, it all kind of makes sense. I really liked the epigraphs at the beginning of each section, very pop culture-y and newsy. Some years I was left wanting to know more, but gradually the whole story comes out over time. The end has a bit of a meet cute that lets the imagination wonder what may happen down the road. ( )

Light breezy romance between Mallory and Jake. They meet at her brother's and fall bachelor party in love. They meet back in Nantucket every Labor Day weekend secretly and have their "same time, next year" affair. Jake goes on to marry a driven woman, but Mallory never does marry, although she has a son (but not with Jake). Everyone I described this story too said, "Who dies in the end?" I guess it was a little predictable, but I enjoyed it. ( )

This is a slightly hesitant 5 stars because I love Hilderbrand's writing but I really did NOT like this relationship---it began to seem just plain STUPID that they couldn't work this out. Wonderful writing about the ups and downs in many of the characters in the book but I wanted both Mallory and Jake to make a decision and not just keep playing...... ( )

Title: 28 Summers

For the last twenty-eight summers, Mallory and Jake have met to rekindle the passionate love affair they began all those years ago. Both of them in spite of their busy lives and families have managed to keep their secret, and to keep their love alive.

But this could be the summer that changes everything.... Mallory learns she's dying and Jake's wife, Ursula DeGournsey, is the frontrunner in the upcoming Presidential election. Could their twenty-eighth summer together also be their last?

This is my first book by this author and I loved her writing. Just by looking at the cover and reading the premise I knew I would like this book and I wasn't disappointed.

What I loved the most about this book was that each chapter starts with various references of events that occurred in that particular year. It brought back so many memories, some of which I had even forgotten about.

I loved Mallory, even though I wanted to hate Jake, I couldn't for Mallory's sake. Jake had the power in his hands to change the situation. Till the end I couldn't understand why did he marry Ursula DeGournsey? He didn't respect his marriage to Ursula since he kept cheating on her and couldn't tell her the truth. Nor could he respect his love towards Mallory, since he always kept her a secret.

Regardless of how frustrated I am, this was a good book. The ending was good and made me sad, even though I knew what the ending was going be at the start of the book.

Even though it is a perfect summer read, I believe that, this is a book that can be read anytime and still enjoy it.

Thank You to NetGalley and Hodder & Stoughton for this ARC!! ( )

It's an easy read and thoroughly engaging. We can always depend on Elin Hilderbrand to provide entertainment. Mallory, the main character, is well-developed and relatable. She loves Jack, a married man who visits her once per year for 28 summers. Mallory knows that Jack isn't going to leave his high-profile lawyer/senator/presidential candidate wife, but it doesn't matter to her. She has romantic relationships that could have been more permanent, but she doesn't seem interested. Mallory gets pregnant after a one-night stand with her brother's best friend, a person she has known forever, chooses to keep the baby and raises him as a single mother.

Mallory is also a well-loved high school English teacher and reader. She shares her love of reading with Jack and her students. Mallory experiences life with many peaks and valleys. She inherits a house from an aunt who is estranged from her family and sometimes doesn't have enough money to maintain it. Her best friend betrays her more than once, yet she develops other lasting relationships. She is kind and thoughtful and almost too nice, as her best friend realizes. She is not overly realistic, but that is what makes good fiction. ( )
