Beide boeken zijn een bundeling van kortverhalen die draaien rond Geralt, de hekser. Op die manier wordt een soort inleiding / voorstelling van het hoofdpersonage en de wereld waarin alles zich afspeelt gemaakt, zodat je als lezer wat achtergrondkennis hebt wanneer je met de saga wilt beginnen. Ik ben geen kortverhalenfan, lees liever volwaardige verhalen, tenzij het niet anders kan (bijv. compilaties, Best Of-uitgaven, ...). In deze bundel is er de nodige actie en spanning, alsook magie (goede en kwade). Geralt is geen normaal mens, heeft blijkbaar geen of moeite met (eigen) gevoelens en emoties. Z'n liefde van z'n leven, Yennefer, komt af en toe terug in deze knipperlichtrelatie. Voor het overige heeft Geralt ook z'n lijstje met vrienden waar hij terecht kan, waarmee hij allerlei avonturen beleeft, maar niet alles is rozengeur en manenschijn. Vooral niet als je inderdaad voor geld mensen beschermt, vreemde monsters het leven ontneemt met gevaar voor eigen leven.
Tot op het moment dat moraal om de hoek komt kijken. En dat wordt Geralt soms niet in dank afgenomen. En da's een pluspunt hier: de filosofische en psychologische elementen. De verhalen zelf lezen zeer vlot, waardoor het boek bijna een pulpgehalte krijgt. Je moet wel af en toe je hoofd erbij houden qua aantal personages en wie/wat/wanneer/hoe, maar da's niet zo'n probleem eens je in het verhaal zit.
Ook positief is, aan het einde van 'De laatste wens', een bestiarium of overzicht van de verschillende wezens en monsters die in dàt boek voorkomen. De nodige uitleg staat erbij, ook als die bepaalde wezens voorkomen in de Slavische mythologie. Op die manier vormt het boek een soort opstapje naar non-fictieboeken over de Slavische mythologie, zoals bijvoorbeeld de boeken van [a:Bernard Cornwell|12542|Bernard Cornwell|https://d.gr-assets.com/authors/1240500522p2/12542.jpg] leiden naar boeken over o.a. de Vikingen, Azincourt en meer.
Over de verhalen zelf: Zoals ik zei, zeer vlot te lezen, daardoor wat pulpachtig, maar in die kortverhalen miste ik, of ik moet erover gelezen hebben, achtergrond over Geralts opvoeding, hoe hij zo geworden is. Er is wel een overkoepelend verhaal, maar de andere verhalen zijn, naar mijn bescheiding mening, te beperkt in omvang en inhoud om echt erin mee te gaan. Misschien ben ik iets te veeleisend, maar ondanks dat ik dit tussendoortje best leuk vond, had ik op geen enkel moment een wow-gevoel. Wellicht zijn de andere boeken anders (beter?), maar ik sta - op dit moment - niet te springen om erin te duiken.
Dus, samengevat: Deze bundel van kortverhalen is leuk als tussendoortje, maar meer niet. ( )
