This book tells of an expedition to New Guinea to study the tree kangaroo, a rare type of animal found only in the Cloud Forest. There are wonderful pictures of the outback and jungles of New Guinea, as well of pictures of exotic animals that many kids have never seen before, though the picture of the spider might freak them out a bit. The kids can get in on the adventure with the descriptions of the journey to the forest and the study that does on there. I would use this book as part of a unit on exotic animals, or as part of a unit on Australia and New Zealand and New Guinea's environment. I would use this book in second or third grade as part of the class's science lesson on habitats. I would include this book and a few others at a station for Tropical Rainforests, as well as books at other stations for Polar Regions, Grasslands, etc. The students would be given a sort of seek and find activity that they would do in groups and would have to move from station to station to get the answers from the texts. I could also use this book in fourth or fifth grade in a lesson about conservation. I would let the students read books like these individually and allow them to create a presentation, in any form they choose, that would help the class learn and become involved in conservation and global warming awareness around the world. A follow up activity apart from the presentations would include a class project on conservation in our own community. The author and photographer join Lisa Dabek, a scientist studying tree kangaroos, and a crew of veterinarians, trackers, and other researchers on an arduous expedition up to Papua New Guinea's cloud forest. There they track and tag several of the elusive tree kangaroos for further study. The discomforts of wet clothes, muddy ground and generally less-than-four-star accommodations are worth it for the group to be in a forest teeming with beauty and wildlife and to work towards the conservation of nature. sem críticas | adicionar uma crítica
