From the New York Times bestselling author of Uprooted and Spinning Silver comes the story of an unwilling dark sorceress who is destined to rewrite the rules of magic. I decided that Orion Lake needed to die after the second time he saved my life. Everyone loves Orion Lake. Everyone else, that is. Far as I'm concerned, he can keep his flashy combat magic to himself. I'm not joining his pack of adoring fans. I don't need help surviving the Scholomance, even if they do. Forget the hordes of monsters and cursed artifacts, I'm probably the most dangerous thing in the place. Just give me a chance and I'll level mountains and kill untold millions, make myself the dark queen of the world. At least, that's what the world expects me to do. Most of the other students in here would be delighted if Orion killed me like one more evil thing that's crawled out of the drains. Sometimes I think they want me to turn into the evil witch they assume I am. The school itself certainly does. But the Scholomance isn't getting what it wants from me. And neither is Orion Lake. I may not be anyone's idea of the shining hero, but I'm going to make it out of this place alive, and I'm not going to slaughter thousands to do it, either. Although I'm giving serious consideration to just one. With flawless mastery, Naomi Novik creates a heroine for the ages-a character so sharply realized and so richly nuanced that she will live on in hearts and minds for generations to come.… (mais)

3 stars bc I actually hate and have no sympathy for the main character. ( )

Very strong In Other Lands vibes: magic exists; here it’s much nastier than you think, not much more prosaic. The snarky, smart, secretly powerful outsider ends up hanging out with the super-powerful, super-competent, secretly miserable popular guy (actually, he suspects her of using dark magic, which she doesn’t). She’s trying to make alliances that will get her through graduation alive, since monsters prey on isolated magic-users, while he’s killing anything that threatens anyone, which turns out to have a bad effect on the magic ecosystem. It moves well and has a great cliffhanger. ( )

Most dangerous boarding school ever! Naomi Novik shifts to the dark side in this story that kept me on the edge of my seat with the dangers that just kept coming to our protagonist. A great read. ( )

Its been awhile since I read a book that manages to do something new with the genre, while having great characters with an actual reason for what they do. Yes, its fairly predictable, because all books like this are usually predictable. But it was done in an unpredictable manner. It even manages to side-step the teenage relationships - with surviving always the most important thing.

I also liked the diversity of the school - the author managed to make the students diverse, without loosing their cultural identities while being acccepted by everyone else.

The setup is also interesting - why send you kid to a dangerous school where they have a high chance of dying? Well, its still better than survival odds outside of the school.... Everything about this school is well thought out - from how the school is powered (the students fear), from why there isn't enough food (the amount of students were doubled, the food wasn't...)

It really is a fun book to read, and in a series I will be continuing. ( )

I had this title on my TBR list for so long. Other titles with shinier/prettier covers kept knocking it further down the pile.
But wow! I'm still not sure what happened, but I LOVED it! I felt that I was just dumped into the middle of a tornado and had to learn how to survive it along with El, the main character.

Short synopsis: Loner junior magic school student just trying to survive until senior year.

The story is told as a running commentary by El, and it is in this commentary you get to know the (weird) lay of the land: El's backstory, classmates, the looooong list of rules and regulations of the school and society as well as the insane magic which rules this world.

And that last sentence ending! The second book in the series, The Last Graduate, is expected in Fall 2021. It will stay HIGH up on my TBR list! ( )

it's too easy to call people evil instead of their choices, and that lets people justify making evil choices, because they convince themselves that it's okay because they're still good people overall, inside their own heads.
