Designed to meet the needs of both first-language and advanced ESL postsecondary students, The Bare Essentials Plus, Third Edition, presents the critical writing skills that have made the Essentials series a success for 25 years. The book begins with a discussion of and exercises related to "audience-appropriate" language; covers syntax, grammar, spelling, and punctuation; and ends with a detailed treatment of the various ways to approach, organize, and develop paragraph and essay topics. All of the core units begin with a Quick Quiz (a pre-test of the skills presented in that unit) and end with a Rapid Review (a post-test that shows students how much they have learned: or have yet to learn). The "Plus" in the title refers to content beyond the "bare essentials." One unit is devoted to language issues that even advanced second-language students need to review, such as verb forms, articles, and prepositions. Another "plus" is instruction in how to write and document short research papers in the MLA and APA formats. A third "plus" is the extended list of readings, which range from the simple five-paragraph theme to short documented essays. The authors include both student writers and well-known professionals such as Jeffrey Moussaieff Masson and Germaine Greer. Another "plus" is our revamped Web site, which, for the instructor, includes a new set of interactive classroom exercises guaranteed to enliven the teaching of "the basics," an essay on plagiarism (what forms it takes, why students resort to it, and how to prevent it), and suggested answers to the discussion questions following each reading in Unit 7. For students, the Web site offers additional examples and exercises for core chapters; an overview of MLA and APA documentation, with examples of how to cite different types of sources; a set of practice tests; and an overview of student survival skills.
