I received a free ebook copy of this book in exchange for my HONEST review.

I have been studying Korean for a LONG time but I have never taken any classes. I study by myself from books and apps, so I am always looking for something new to push me past my current level (where I seem to be stuck).

I jumped at this book as soon as I saw it offered. I'm glad I did. I like the layout and the content. There are some good explanations and it actual has hangul (written Korean) in the text. I HATE books that only show you the Romanized Korean (written with the English alphabet). If you are going to study/learn Korean, you MUST be able to read Hangul.

In my opinion, this book is a great aid to my Korean studying arsenal. It has the word listed, the meaning, a sample sentence and the translation of the sentence. It may not be a great book for you if you are just starting out...it's more of a high-beginner/mid-level study aid.

I think "word" books (vocabulary) need to have sample sentences rather than just meanings...like this one. The reason being, even though you may know the meaning of a certain word, you may still not be able to use it properly. Context and/or placement within the sentence, etc could be different than what you assume...prefix, suffix, etc.

I give this easy to use book 4 out of 5 stars! ( )

The "in context" is rather weak. This is simply a collection of language drills for upper beginners. There's only one phrase per word, neither the revised romanization nor hangul itself are explained, and there's no romanization for the sample phrases. For that matter, the words have very basic dictionary definitions, with no explanations for conjugations or typical usage. I wouldn't really call this contextual, and the work doesn't stand on its own for the proposed purpose.

This book is what it promises: a collection of the 2000 most frequent words in Korean. Each word is presented with one example sentence. It's in hangul with no romanization, so if you're a beginner, be forewarned that you'll need to have hangul under your belt for this to be helpful.

I think Routledge's Frequency Dictionary of Korean is more comprehensive, with a ton more examples per word, but this Lingo Mastery book is a more budget-friendly option. Overall, it's a helpful, no-frills book to help you learn Korean. ( )

This book is a useful study tool in addition to language apps or classes. The romanization is helpful for learning pronunciation. However, it says in the description that these are the 2000 most frequent words in common media. But I have to wonder what media the author was watching. There are a lot of words in this book that I still don't know the Spanish equivalent from 8 years of high school and college classes. Also, the Korean font was hard to read on my Kindle. That may just be because it's an older model, but it still detracted from the reading experience. ( )

Does what it says on the tin. It provides a list of 2000 common and useful words in Korean.

Each word is written in English with the word in phonetic western alphabet and Korean. It is also used in a sentence.

I think it was a serious mistake to not include a chapter at the start teaching the Korean alphabet, especially as it is known as the easiest in the world to learn.

I also think that there could have been more structure with how the words were presented. The order of the list is too random and learning doesn't build from one related word to the next.

For example, item 338 is ne, which means yes. I would think that the word for yes would be one of top 10 words and I would have put it at the front of the list, not back at 338. This is followed by the word for fulfilled and proceeded by the word for show. There is no relation between entries and no building on concepts, no attempt to put the most common or useful words first.

The biggest flaw is that there is no index so if you want to learn a specific word or refresh your lessons you would have to hunt through 2000 entries to fin the one you want. I suppose for the ebook version you could use a search feature but it's a poor substitute for a real index.

This book won't teach you to speak Korean from scratch, but could be a useful vocabulary list for beginning and intermediate Korean learners.
