The Scarlet Pimpernel is the original masked hero adventure story. During the French Revolution a secret society of English gentlemen is formed by the enigmatic Scarlet Pimpernel, to rescue their fellow French nobility. Marguerite's brother is threatened by a Frenchman, who demands information on the Scarlet Pimpernel in return for her brother's safety. Marguerite makes the exchange only to discover that her boring fop of a husband is the Pimpernel himself! She follows him to France and so each proves themselves to the other what they really are.
Caramellunacy: A young adult historical fantasy set during the breathless build-up to the French Revolution/the Terror. A dastardly villain, a string of creepy murders & an intriguing psychic gift make this a lot of fun.
AbigailAdams26: This work of historical fiction for children is another tale of French aristocrats being rescued during the Terror, and even features Baron de Batz, who appears in some of the later Scarlet Pimpernel books.
An enjoyable story, but this is one of those rare ones where the movie is actually better than the book. The 1934 version is the one I grew up on and is still the best. There was a version done in the 1980’s which was okay, but no match for Leslie Howard’s performance. ( )
I'd always heard about this book, came across it while browsing in the library and thought I'd give it a try. It's a typical B-Grade 19th cent/turn of the century novel, with a compelling adventure plot, but cartoon characters ( )
4.5* for this audiobook edition narrated by Stephen Crossley.
Despite knowing the plot well from previous reads (and the classic film version), I still found the book caught me up in the thrills. There were many little details that I had forgotten. ( )
