Really the only parts of interest in this book that I found were chapters 2: Elementary Principles of Composition and 5: An Approach to Style. Chapter 2 was the more interesting and informative of the two. The rest is okay for a mechanical refresher on English sentences though a few might be a little outdated in this edition. Overall, I would recommend this if you're interested in a few pointers to sharpen your writing. I very much liked this book, even if certain parts are maybe not applicable to writing in Swedish. Most of the book can be applied to writing in most languages though, and considering how much social media I deal with in English it doesn't hurt to know the proper grammar rules (or, you know, go over them again... I did learn some in school, after all). The only thing I really disagreed with was the idea that "he" works well as a gender-neutral pronoun in English, better than singular "they". I'd prefer "they" any day, and the book totally allows one to choose freely in this matter, which I liked.
Buy it, study it, enjoy it. It's as timeless as a book can be in our age of volubility. (previous edition) ...still a little book, small enough and important enough to carry in your pocket, as I carry mine. The Elements of Style does not deserve the enormous esteem in which it is held by American college graduates. Its advice ranges from limp platitudes to inconsistent nonsense. Its enormous influence has not improved American students' grasp of English grammar; it has significantly degraded it. Tem um guia de estudo para estudantesDistinctionsNotable Lists
The Elements of Style by William Strunk, Jr. is an American English writing style guide. It is one of the best-known and most influential prescriptive treatment of English grammar and usage, and often is required reading in U.S. high school and university composition classes. The original 1918 edition of The Elements of Style detailed eight elementary rules of usage, ten elementary principles of composition, "a few matters of form," and a list of commonly "misused" words and expressions. This book, printed as a private edition in 1918 for the use of his students, became a classic on the local campus, known as "the little book," and its successive editions have since sold over ten million copies. This version is based on the public-domain text from 1918. Não foram encontradas descrições de bibliotecas. |

You can’t go wrong with this advice. Short, sweet, and to the point. Absolutely timeless. Writers and editors alike can learn from this. ( )
