Title: Shadow of a Dead Man (Shotgun Johnny #2)
Author: William W. Johnstone & J. A. Johnstone
Pages:
Year: 2020
Publisher: Pinnacle
My rating: 5 out of 5 stars.
If you haven’t read the first book in the series, Shotgun Johnny, you will still enjoy this tale. The fictional character Shotgun Johnny is a man who had a stellar career, made a mistake and the sought refuge in a bottle. It wasn’t until he met Sheila Bonner, a bank president, that he felt the possibility of living life to the fullest. Now, in the sequel, Johnny and Sheila are companions, but as always something is about to disrupt any future plans these two may have had in mind.
While on a return trip to Hallelujah Junction with the gold from the mine for the bank, Johnny is accosted by men out to take that gold at all costs. Even when given a chance to walk away alive but with the gold the moment the nefarious men pull a gun, to take the gold from Johnny with force it is time for Johnny to defend himself. That starts the ball rolling as one of the men is killed and the son of a wealthy cattle/landowner named Garth Starrett. What builds from there is a constant fight, both in the town of Hallelujah Junction and in the mountains. It isn’t just Johnny’s life at stake but Sheila’s as well from a woman bent on murderous and soulless revenge.
Once again, the Johnstones have penned an exciting tale with blooming romance, righting wrongs, and fighting for justice! There is a young woman who helps the local doctor with caring for people in the town and vicinity, Glyneen MacFarland. She is a young woman whose past is slowly unfurled the further along readers go in the book. Two other characters bring life and at times a chuckle to the story, one named Mean Mike O’Sullivan and the other his partner named Thursday. There are shady characters too, one of which is Jonah Flagg, who just may get his comeuppance in the book!
Read the exciting tale for yourself and see if you don’t get hooked on this series as well as the other novels available from the Johnstone pen!
