This is a fast, light read, but very entertaining. The characters are very likeable. Just went and bought the other two in the series so I can read them next! ( ![]() Not shit. This is an excellent novel combining elements of history and fantasy. I'm a little surprised that this hasn't taken off more, since it is a great combination, and Novik does an excellent job setting the standard high. Only four stars because it's not *as* good as Novik's later work. The plot is a little slow going and we don't get to know Laurence's personality that well. But the *atmosphere* is so amazing I can't get over it and want to read every book in the series. It's the Royal Navy *but with dragons!* How could anyone fail to love that? Awwwww, yeah, would you look at that? Book's got DRAGON right there in the TITLE. You know this shit is gonna be good! This is a historical fantasy, centered on Britain during the Napoleonic war. With one exception: Countries have air corps. Composed of giant, sentient dragons. Manned by teams of swordsmen, sharpshooters, bombers, metalsmiths, lookouts, etc. How have you not picked this up yet? Captain Will Laurence of the Royal Navy unexpectedly ends up as the handler of the dragon Temeraire. This book details their early training and battles. The writing is evocative, not only of the action, but of the time period and carries surprising emotional resonance for its subject matter. Characters enjoy dynamic arcs and feel, get this, like actual, you know, PEOPLE. Dialogue is realistic, pacing is excellent, if the plot is somewhat episodic (typical of 'set-up' novels). While mostly a tasteful guilty pleasure---think of a square of perfect, antioxident-rich, dark chocolate at the end of a stressful day---the books do hold some sophistication in themes exploring friendship, honor, duty, freedom, and humanity. First in a series, currently with 7 books. Just look at that majestic bastard on the cover. You know you want to read this. sem críticas | adicionar uma crítica

Aerial combat brings a thrilling new dimension to the Napoleonic Wars as valiant warriors rise to Britain's defense by taking to the skies ... not aboard aircraft but atop the mighty backs of fighting dragons. When HMS Reliant captures a French frigate and seizes its precious cargo, an unhatched dragon egg, fate sweeps Capt. Will Laurence from his seafaring life into an uncertain future--and an unexpected kinship with a most extraordinary creature. Thrust into the rarified world of the Aerial Corps as master of the dragon Temeraire, he will face a crash course in the daring tactics of airborne battle. For as France's own dragon-borne forces rally to breach British soil in Bonaparte's boldest gambit, Laurence and Temeraire must soar into their own baptism of fire.
