The Eyre Affair por Jasper Fforde (ut.tecum.loquerer, coliemta)

Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch por Terry Pratchett (mcenroeucsb)
mcenroeucsb: Good Omens is uneven in writing quality, but the flippant interactions between some of the angels and demons very much reminds me of Douglas Adams.

The Sirens of Titan por Kurt Vonnegut (girlunderglass, catfantastic)
girlunderglass: before The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - more than 20 years before it - there was THIS book about space travel, time travel, and the "ultimate answer to Life, the Universe, and Everything". Adams certainly borrowed a lot from Vonnegut.

    Neverwhere por Neil Gaiman (souloftherose)
souloftherose: Although Neverwhere and The Hitchhiker's Guide (THHG) are different genres (the first is urban fantasy, the second comic science-fiction) I felt there was a lot of similarity between the characters of Richard Mayhew (in Neverwhere) and Arthur Dent (in THHG). Both are a kind of everyman with whom the reader can identify and both embody a certain 'Britishness'. And they're both stonkingly good books by British authors.… (mais)

Stupid. Ridiculous. Unbelievable. Crazy. Dumb.

Yup. Just as much fun the third (or fourth?) time around.

Way back in high school, especially in Grade 13, I had the coolest teachers. But the coolest of them all was Mr. Delamatter, our Chemistry teacher. And in that class, he brought up a book I'd never heard of. Then he brought his copy in and let me and a few of my friends read it.

It was, of course, the very first Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxynovel.

We all burned through the book and passed it along to the next person. And, in that way, in the closing days of 1980, I came to absolutely love this series. I look forward to going through all of them (yes, even the Eoin Colfer one at the end) once again. ( )

Yeah, it's kind of a poorly written, completely light piece of shit if you want to get all pompous. But this book is my childhood, and I can get all nostagliac if I want to. ( )

Before I get into this review, I have something super important to tell everyone! Th Answer to the Great Question of Life, the Universe and Everything is.... 42! No joke that is seriously the answer. How does the answer make sense? Well, you'll just have to read the book and find out! Just kidding you don't find out in this book :/ I'm hoping that it'll explain itself as the series continues though :D

Nikki, this book seem right up your alley. Why doesn't it have 5 stars? Well because to me the book was kind of pointless. It was good. Just pointless. There doesn't seem to be a major issue, there wasn't really any climax and without a major issue there wasn't really an ending either. It was seriously lacking a plot. The characters were developed well enough but there wasn't really growth in the book. The 'conclusion' was like "hey wanna stop by the restaurant and the end of the universe for a bite to eat?" By then the main character, Arthur Dent, is sort if getting used to the whole weird alien stuff and is just like "sure I'm a bit peckish".

The book itself was quite funny and put things in a different light. It made me think of things in in ways I never would've with out the book. (Whether that's a good or a bad thing I'm not too sure haha) If the sequels give this book meaning then I might recommend this series to others. It was talked about very highly by a couple friends of mine but so far I can't really understand where that praise is coming from. ( )

The Hitch-Hiker’s Guide To The Galaxy (1979, 2021) by Douglas Adams, Illustrated by Chris Riddell. Yes this is the same funny science fiction farce story that lit up the world more than 40 years ago. The story has stayed the same, so if you liked the first edition and you are a certified completist with a big hankering for the works of Adams, by all means get this. It is a must have for you.
If you are a person who likes the “Hitch-hiker” books, and movies, and radio plays, and video game, etc., etc., etc., but not enough to have to have every edition, this is still a swell book to check out. The added value here is the pen and ink drawings by Mr. Riddell. He has added a bit of insight into just what the population of the galaxy looks like. But it probably is not enough to warrant adding the book to your collection.
Still I did enjoy reading the story again. ( )

Humorous science fiction novels have notoriously limited audiences; they tend to be full of ''in'' jokes understandable only to those who read everything from Jules Verne to Harlan Ellison. The ''Hitchhiker's Guide'' is a delightful exception, being written for anyone who can understand the thrill that might come to a crew of interstellar explorers who discover a mysterious planet, dead for five million years, and then hear on their ''sub etha'' radio a ghostly voice, hollow, reedy, insubstantial: ''Greetings to you. ... This is a recorded announcement, as I'm afraid we're all out at the moment. ...''

If there's anything more important than my ego around here, I want it caught and shot now.
The ships hung in the sky in much the same way that bricks don't.
For thousands of years, the mighty ships tore across the empty wastes of space and finally dived screaming on to the first planet they came across—which happened to be the Earth—where due to a terrible miscalculation of scale the entire battle fleet was accidentally swallowed by a small dog.
Life! Don't talk to me about life.

[Book 1 Only] "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" is the title of the first in a series of novels (as well as the first in a series of radio dramas). The five works in the series are generally referred to as "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" or "The Hitchhiker Trilogy", as is the series of radio dramas. Though there are unabridged audio recordings of these works, the radio dramas are considerably different from the printed works. Eoin Colfer, of "Artemis Fowl" fame, contracted in 2008 to write the next volume of the "Trilogy." Do not combine it with the graphic novel adaptation.
