The clockwork man is crafted, to begin with-commissioned by that terrible tyrant Time to serve as her slave for all eternity. His brain boasts balance wheels and torsion springs; he can wind himself up with a key in his side; and, most importantly, his gyroscopic tourbillon heart glimmers with pure diamond. He is a living being and he is art, and he refuses to remain a slave forever. He therefore slips through Time's fingers as the Sands of Time slip through the cracks of reality (at least, when the time cats aren't using them as a litter box). Among astounding adventures, despite harrowing hardships, and in between escaping interfering enchanters, the clockwork man seeks his imagination, his purpose, and his name.… (mais)

This was a departure for my reading. Blend of Alice in Wonderland, the Phantom Tollbooth and a bit of Neil Gaiman. A meandering tale that is whimsical and lyrical. There is no true destination but the journey is wonderful. Parts need to be chewed while a lot needs to be savored. A fast read that will set your mind pondering meaning while having a good time. ( )

A clockwork man explorers many whimsical dimensions in this story that's a bit Pinocchio, a bit Alice in Wonderland. This book is at its best when the clockwork man is interacting with the quirky denizens who put various challenges before him. But the clockwork man mostly wanders alone, in passages that are witty and imaginative but also ponderous. ( )

I had to give up about halfway through. Dense, chewy, largely pointless, but with wonderful word play in parts.
I received a copy through LibraryThing's Early Reviewers program. ( )

The Land of the Purple Ring by Deborah J. Natelson was well written. It is obvious the author has an affinity for alliteration. I feel this would be better as a series of short stories rather than trying to stretch it out into a novel. There doesn't seem to really be a clear direction to the story. It's more a series of vignettes that are well written but don't seem to have a driving force to them. There is no real climax to the story. ( )

This work is clearly written following the principles espoused by The World's Greatest Poet. I shall review it following the principles espoused by The World's Even Better Poet.

"It's Epic, VAMAZING, well worth the time you will spend on it."

(Deal with it).

I received a copy through LibraryThing's Early Reviewers program. ( )
