I remain ambivalent towards these Boom! Studios Firefly comics. On the one hand, the character voices are a bit shaky (not terrible, but not great). There are idiotic mistakes that any fan devoted enough to bother buying tie-in stories like these would be frustrated by, like having Mal take a bite from an apple or never, ever using Chinese in the dialogue. And the scope of events feels much too grandiose to be believably set between the TV show and the feature film (though that's clearly where it occurs). But on the other hand, the character actions, motivations and personalities are pretty on-point, the events -- scope and importance not fitting in its designated spot in the continuity aside -- feel like things that could have happened on the show, and the world, by and large, feels believably like Firefly. Personally, I don't really find that worth the trade-off compared to Dark Horse's much more limited but much more polished, canon-feeling output, but I get that with limited to no involvement from the original creators and a need to put out a much more regular publication to warrant the license, it might be for some. And it's still pretty decent, if you can swallow a few camels. It just falls sadly short of capturing the rich, memorable and iconic feel of the show that's created the interest in these comics in the first place.

But I see that their more recent out put, at least, is set after the film, rather than forcing it into the existing continuity, and that should at the very least remove one big chunk of my issues from play. That could tip the scales, if the positives stay the same (or get better -- their Firefly OGNs have been a notch above the ongoing title, giving me some additional reason for hope). So I think I will keep buying for a while yet. ( )

Mal as (unwilling-ish) sheriff is an interesting idea, but it means he spends the whole volume separated from the crew of the Serenity. And the art is rather stylized, and often doesn't look much like the characters from the TV show. ( )

Art is childish and confusing in many places. Story is confusing as it was obviously cut down to fit the comic book floppy format. Won't get the rest. ( )

This is an interesting premise, and a new way of mixing up a bunch of characters to see how they interact. Mal works very well in the "reluctant lawman" role, and I like his relationship with Boss Moon. The rest of the Firefly crew is here, a little bit, but I miss seeing more of them. ( )
