William W. Johnstone's Last Gunfighter novels have made him a national bestselling author and confirmed his standing as America's most popular chronicler of the Wild Westâ??and of the men and women who tamed it. Now, he brings his gritty, hard-edged vision of the frontier to a story of greed, power, and courage, as a beautiful land is caught in the grips of a dirty little war . . .

Title: The Burning (The Last Gunfighter # 8)
Author: William W Johnstone
E-book Pages: 266
Year: 2016
Publisher: Pinnacle
My rating: 5 out of 5 stars.
Ever hear of the fictional character Frank Morgan? Frank Morgan is known as the last gunfighter as the times he is living in are changing. The books are stand-alones but there is benefit in reading them in order. One is to see the character as he changes and how he interacts with others when he comes to their aid. The other plus is that sometimes what occurs in former books shows up in some way in another. The author does a fantastic job of helping any reader unfamiliar with Frank Morgan’s past exploits understand him by using flashbacks done in a variety of ways.
In The Burning, Frank Morgan drifts into the middle of a range war. The range war is between two powerful ranchers and those who want to farm. The town at the beginning of the book has no name as it is relatively small but with the aid of Frank the town is about to experience a boom. However, it may take some blood spilled before the peace between ranchers and farmers truly exists. Frank is longing for a place to call his own and even buys some land. The question he has is will other folks let him stay.
In this adventure-filled tale, Frank Morgan stands up for the underdog because it is the right thing to do. While Frank is a peaceful man at heart, he won’t back down from those who are gunning for him. Once again William W Johnstone has penned a wild west action novel that will keep readers turning pages until the last one is read. But don’t be too surprised if you find yourself looking for more of these novels from Johnstone country!
