Absoluut een verdienstelijk boek dat de geologische en biologische evolutie van de aarde en het leven erop bevattelijk uitlegt, volgens de laatste stand van de wetenschap. Andrew H. Knoll is niet de eerste de beste, als professor aan Harvard, met vooral evolutionaire biologie als specialisatie. Dat merk je wel aan dit boek: de eerste hoofdstukken, die vooral geologische informatie bevatten, blijven tamelijk moeilijk om te volgen. De daaropvolgende, met de biologische evolutie, zijn duidelijk zijn ding.
De belangrijkste boodschap van Knoll zit achteraan, met een uitgebreide waarschuwing tegen de rampen die ons staan te wachten als het klimaat en de biodiversiteit zo negatief blijven evolueren. Vooral de vaststelling dat het huidige CO2-peil in de atmosfeer het hoogste is in miljoenen jaren (en het blijft nog stijgen), spreekt boekdelen. Dit is dus een boek met een these. eh..The last chapter was all about how terrible humans are. i already knew that. Otherwise the book is ok. ( )

This book is the gold standard for all modern scientific non-fiction. The very measuring stick by which all others must be compared. ( )
