Lots of good intentions behind this novel, but it was way too slice-of-life for my taste. ( )

Time flew by as I read this book. I looked up and realized that I only had half the book left. I wished I could slow down time because this book deals with so much that I kind of got lost in the emotions. Right as I finished it (and was definitely crying a little) I wanted to start the book over so that I could read it with the perspective of knowing how it ends. I will another time.

This is a heartbreaking and eye-opening view into what trouble your head can get you into when life is hard and support is lost. I can sympathize with the fact that there are no easy fixes. I wish there were. I enjoy Tahereh Mafi as an author, and I appreciate the voice she gives to an unseen group of young adults/teens. ( )

**I was given an ARC of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.**

An Emotion of Great Delight follows Shadi, a high school student who wears hijab, during 2002 and 2003. The alternating timelines slowly reveal changes in her world, her family, and herself that is an eye-opening must read. After 9/11 and a drunk driving incident, Shadi's life is turned upside down. Strangers alienate her from her own American roots, her best friend is abandoning her, and Shadi is withdrawing from her family and classes—all culminating in situations and choices that were heart-breaking to read. While there is no denying that this is an overwhelmingly sad book, the take away is one of healing and growth. Tahereh Mafi has crafted a beautifully touching realistic fiction piece about finding hope and love through trauma. ( )

What a depressing book! Seriously this took all my effort to finish as the main character battled hurdle after hurdle. Problem 1 : A Muslim girl growing up in the US in the time just after 9/11 at the height of the "War on Terror" confronting the prejudices and weird questions from the general public just because she wears a hijab. Problem 2 : Her brother has just died from a car accident and her mother is so consumed with grief she is cutting herself. Problem 3: Her father is in hospital after his second near fatal heart attack and Shadi hates him and blames him for her brother's death and hopes he dies. Problem 4 : Her best friend has renounced everything Islamic about herself in the wake of 9/11 and has cut off all ties to Shadi. Problem 5 : Shadi's ex-best friends' brother is in love with her which has added to Problem 4. Problem 6 : Shadi and her sister have drifted apart after her brother's death and over the blame Shadi lays on the father. See what I mean --soooo depressing!

At the end of the book there appears to only be a resolution to Problem 3 and a quick tie up to Problem 5 which is unsatisfying. I'm not sure if teens reading this book would stick it out to the end because this character has so much going against her AND seems to spend all her breakdowns in the rain, park and her ex -best friends house instead of confronting the problems head on.
