A book that you sometimes get lost with but ends up a terrific read. ( )

This novel is the sequel to Black Box. Detective Billy Harney returns to the Chicago Police Department after being on leave. He is paired with partner, Carla Griffin, whom everyone including his twin sister warns him is “bad news”. Their first case together is a drive-by shooting in which a child is killed. In the process of the investigation Billy believes this case is somehow tied to the death of his wife. Billy is finally able to sort it all out and realizes what truly happened to his wife. As he is helping his siblings ready his childhood home for sale, he finds a red book hidden away with coded numbers. I am guessing the third book in this series will shed some light on what this red book means. ( )

I can't say this was my favorite James Patterson book, which surprised me, since I think this is the first one that I didn't really enjoy until almost the end of the book. Overall it was dark, a lot of corruption...just didn't click with me. ( )

Billy Harney exposed a ring of corrupt cops, including his father, in Chicago. He is now returning to the force and is assigned to an elite task force, along with a new partner, Carla. However, there is still corruption in the department. Billy and Carla are assigned to investigate a drive-by shooting that killed a toddler. They believe it is about rival gangs fighting over drug turf. Upon deeper investigation, they uncover a child trafficking ring.
As Billy continues to investigate, he questions the circumstances of his wife's death which was ruled a suicide.
This book is full of tension, and a lot of violence, but it is well-written and a page turner. My biggest complaint is the insensitive and offensive comments about Billy's sibling's girlfriend. (p.116 of hardback) ( )
