Upon this Throne by Pamela Taylor—an early reader’s reviewThis was the fourth book in a series that I had not previously read--the author did a good job of hinting about the background without leaving you in the total dark nor hitting you over the head with the past; so this novel could stand alone, but, of course, it may have been better if the other books had already been covered. This was a story of rebuilding a kingdom devastated by war and a selfish leader. That king is dead and his younger brother has to clean up the mess. Most of the story is about the people he chooses for key positions—real “action” does not become a part of the story until the final third of the book. Making good decisions is obviously vital to running any organization and I think the vastness of responsibility faced by a ruler was very well illustrated, but the people were almost too sweet and too cooperative for the most part. There were some voices of discontent, but they felt small and kind of petty considering the king’s position. Overall, this was clearly a feminine voice that was almost preaching social organization. It may fly for preteens and I can’t even disagree with her ideas, but the handling was a bit too saccharine for me. Esta crítica foi escrita no âmbito dos Primeiros Críticos do LibraryThing. UPON THIS THRONE (Second Son Chronicles Book 4 of 5) by Pamela Taylor, is mediaeval historical fiction. In the fourth volume of the Second Son Chronicles, Alfred now a traitor to the Crown for desertion on the field of battle must live with his family in complete seclusion in a remote corner of his wifes homeland, avoiding all contact with the outside world lest the kings spies discover their whereabouts. When horsemen are spotted in the forest one wintry morning, the chill that runs through the cottage has nothing to do with the temperature outside. Não foram encontradas descrições de bibliotecas. |

The story begins with a full recap of Volume 3. In this historical genre novel, the author attempts
to introduce many current themes such as immigrants, homelessness, inflammatory speech and pandemics. After Alfred finds out that John has died and he is now the new ruler, much of the book is spent with him filling positions that his brother John had dissolved. There are a few action moments but in general it is a commentary upon social issues.
