Historical fiction set in 1971 Mexico.
When a neighbor asks her to watch her cat, Maite, a comic book lover, agrees, but plans to take a few items from the apartment as part of her payment. Then her neighbor, Leonora, disappears, and people come looking for her and some photos Leonora hid. Maite can’t find them and her involvement with her neighbor brings her danger. She meets Elvis who is a thug, and he is also searching for Leonora.
I really wasn’t interested in the story, it was just ok. However, if you are interested in the corruption of Mexico in the 1970s, you might enjoy this. ( )

How could I have missed the days of the "Dirty War" in the 70s? After reading this story filled with violence, sex and revenge from the dark side, it feels like I'm a little more up to speed.

A Mexican group, known as the Hawks, attacked, tortured and killed student protestors on the left side of politics. One of the main characters was Leonora, an art student and activist, who asked her neighbor, Maite, to take care of her cat for a couple of days. Little did Maite know that she was now feeling like she was inside one of her favorite books: Secret Romance which gave her a taste of danger. The big question was: what happened to Leonora as she disappeared after a few days while strange men made their way into her apartment looking for photos.

The book was much different than the author's previous one: Mexican Gothic. I found it to be engaging with the historical part opening up my eyes. There were a lot of references to Maite's passion for books, comics and music. It shows when life is crazy on the outside, it's what keeps us going. One of her friends pointed out, "Change should come peacefully. We need a more educated nation, we need to come to agreements." The book leaves the reader with much to think about. ( )

A slow burn but intricately entangled noir tale, where you're never quite sure who the bad guys are, and who are the good guys, or is there any such distinction? Darkness and brutality are balanced with hope and possibility, and enough twists and entanglements to keep you reading to find out what will happen. ( )

It's a noir and the novel drags a bit under that genre's stipulations. But the setting is fresh and the characters make sense and I'm not going to ding a novel for delivering exactly what it intends to. If you're looking for anything other than a slow burn set during the Mexican Dirty Wars - look elsewhere. If that sounds neat to you, pick this up. ( )

Velvet Was the Nightis noir, pulp fiction but one could be excused for labeling it literary art. The novel is set in Mexico during the dirty wars of the 1970's and, though fiction, is a fair and accurate reflection of those turbulent and bloody years.
Silvia Moreno-Garcia's characters are beautifully drawn.
Maite's thirtieth birthday is celebrated at her mother's where the family is served Maite's sister's favorite cake. "Love, frail as gossamer, stitched together from a a thousand songs and a thousand comic books, made of the dialogue spoken in films and the posters designed by ad agencies: love was what she lived for."
El Elvis is a thug who "wanted to hold his punches,"> and who realizes this was ironic. He wants an education but has been expelled from school, ostensibly for vandalizing a lavatory but actually because he is dyslectic. "It was just that his teachers were wanting to be rid of one of the 'dumber' kids in the class." El Elvis is a code name given him by El Mago his boss in the Hawks, organized toughs who are employed to rough-up and intimidate any who offend those in power.
Their stories play out in emotionally charged yet poignant inevitability.

It is well established that the Hawks are an officially financed, organized, trained and armed repressive group, the main purpose of which since its founding in September 1968 has been the control of leftist and anti-government students.
