Luckily for my sanity, I was constricted by time and sleeping bouts, otherwise I'd have read myself silly trying to finish this book in a single gulp. Which I almost did, really.

And boy oh boy, what a book. There's nothing I didn't like about it. As someone who suffers from intense emotions about everything, this was something I kept vibing with at every sentence my eyes fell upon.

You could stop at any page and find something worth tattooing onto your body, that's how beautifully written it is. I feel aesthetically hungover after finishing it. That's the feeling I have.

Now if you excuse me, I have to go weep some more over this artpiece. ( )

Wonderfully written but i found the plot occasionally dull. Mostly during the time between when they found Magdalena to a little after they found Alexi. But even when the story felt a little slow the prose kept me reading. Would love to read more by Gibson.

At times it failed to hook me and at others I couldn't put it down.

Spent so much time wavering between 3 and 5 stars and just figured I'd split the difference.

Side note: It was also a very good depiction of an abusive relationship and how shedding one is empowering. ( )

A Dowry of Blood is in parts very uncomfortable to read and, at the same time, beautifully written. Because of the main thematic focus I even found the letter format to be believable, meaning I can believe someone would actually sit down and write this kind of letter.
Bonus points for the first sentence. They are usually not very important to me, but I did really like this one!

I did enjoy the characters of the brides, their interactions and character arcs, the atmosphere, the gothic style, the flowery language and the rather slow pacing.

The main villain felt a little flat to me, and his pursuits besides imprisoning others in abusive relationships, mainly his scientific interests, which I expected to play some important part in the story, don't have any impact, which I felt was a bit of wasted potential.

I was invested in the overall story and did enjoy reading it, but here's what broke this book for me: It's not a vampire story. The main story could have been told in any setting, at any time, it could even have been a contemporary story without any supernatural elements. The characters being vampires has no real impact on the story. But this book is marketed as a vampire story, so I expected vampires. And on top of that, it is marketed as a retelling of Dracula from the perspective of one of the brides. That was the point what got me really interested and why I wanted to read this book so badly. But the villain is neither Dracula, nor do we find any elements of the Dracula story, expect for a castle being in Romania. And again, that castle could have been anywhere, it didn't even neccessarily need to be a castle.

Maybe, probably, this is marketing's fault, because the story itself is good. But I was promised something different and finishing this book, I felt a little cheated. ( )

I have heard great things about this book, and I was very excited to find that I could request A Dowry of Blood on NetGalley - and even MORE excited when I was given access!

I think A Dowry of Blood was the first polyamorous relationship (m/f/f/m) I have read, and it was done so well. The author, S. T. Gibson, spent a good amount of time focusing on each of these relationships, and it showed. I really liked reading about the dynamics between each of the different characters and how they related to each other, and ultimately, how they were able to forge a new life after the death of their creator (not a spoiler: Constanta mentions that she killed their creator on the first page).

I also think the format of the book worked really well. It was written in epistolary form, with the main protagonist - Dracula's first bride, Constanta - writing letters to her deceased former creator about their life together and why he ultimately had to die. It was a very interesting format, and reminiscent of Bram Stoker's Dracula, which is also told in a similar epistolary form. I also enjoyed the small interludes that were beautifully written; some of these shorter sections were poetry written by the author, and I think they added another layer of depth to the story.

It was a beautifully written book that combined elements from fantasy & horror & romance genres, which I enjoyed.

Thank you to NetGalley and Nyx Publishing for a copy of this eARC in exchange of an honest review. All thoughts are my own. ( )
