3.5 stars, definitely a step up over the previous books since the Club members are all involved. Tara Burke and her infant daughter disappear, ostensibly after a fight with her husband over her spendthrift ways. Her husband Lucas, is of course, the primary suspect, especially because Tara's mother publicly accuses him of abuse in a posting on Cindy's blog at the San Francisco Examiner, and even further, when his affair with a high school senior is revealed. Cindy refers the mother to her WMC partner, detective Sergeant Lindsay Boxer of the SFPD. Lindsay bucks protocol and the direct orders of the new police chief, commencing her investigation, even though the case is in Missing Persons. When the baby's body is found at the beach, dead not by drowning but suffocation according to chief medical examiner Claire Washburn. Lucas has an alibi, and then bodies start piling up. When a murder weapon is found with his prints, Lucas is arrested and prosecution of the case is assigned to WMC's own Yuki Castellano. Lucas's defense is that someone close to him did it, and Lindsay works this angle via husband Joe's shady friend in Washington. At the end, it's still not clear whodunit. ( )

Tara Burke and her baby daughter, Lorrie, are missing. And Tara’s distraught mother, Kathleen Wyatt, is certain that Tara’s husband, Lucas Burke, is responsible. She’s certain he killed the young mother and her baby girl.

But high school teacher Lucas is adamant . . . Tara’s gone off in a huff because Lucas cut up her credit cards.

When Kathleen goes to Cindy Thomas, it isn’t long before Lindsay Boxer is involved in the investigation. Despite conflicting statements, there’s no doubt that the young mother and her baby daughter are missing. What is the truth behind their disappearance?

This book, the twenty-first in the Women’s Murder Club series, brings all four women into the storyline, but Lindsay and Cindy are the focus of the unfolding story. As with earlier books in the series, the chapters are short, the plot twists and turns, the story is intriguing and keeps the reader invested in the telling of the tale.

With the investigation and a trial being major elements of the narrative, readers see Lindsay, Cindy, and Yuki in action; Claire plays a strong supporting role. Unfortunately, the ending feels rushed and abrupt and the question of ultimate guilt remains, leaving the reader to make a determination. Nevertheless, fans of the series are likely to enjoy this addition to the series.

Another well written, nail biting book. Lots of twists and turns that will keep you guessing. I love the camaraderie between the women in the Murder Club.
Good Fast Read. ( )

Much better than the last several. Great, convoluted plot ( )

When a distraught mother pleads with San Francisco Chronicle reporter Cindy Thomas to investigate the disappearance of her daughter, Tara, and baby granddaughter, Cindy immediately loops in SFPD Sergeant Lindsay Boxer.

The prime suspect is Tara's schoolteacher husband, Lucas Burke, until he puts forward a theory of his own that unexpectedly connects the dots on a constellation of killings.

As the case grows into something far bigger than any of them could have imagined, the four friends will need each other to help unpick the truth from a web of lies.

Another amazing addition to one of my favorite series of all time!

One of the highlights for me with this series are the characters. Their bond and the way the work together as a team despite being in different fields is so amazing. The plot is intriguing and it contains enough suspense and twists to keep you hooked till the end.

However, the ending is a bit rushed. It leaves you slightly disappointed and asking for more.

Thank You NetGalley and Random House UK, Cornerstone for this ARC! ( )
