What a splendid book! Caroline Lee is an excellent narrator! Great accent, brings Australia to life but doesn't distract. I was totally captivated by the characters and the mystery. Delighted with the wrap up! Splendid insight on a prickly situation. I really could not wait to get back to this book. It was long, but not long enough. I would have loved to follow these fine folks on the rest of their journeys. Great writing excellently delivered! After just finishing Vanity Fair I was thrilled to find a book so absorbing. I'm sorry that it is finished. Highly recommend it to lovers of Lianne Moriarity, Jodi Picoult and Kate Morton. My thanks to Macmillan Audio and NetGalley for providing an advance listening copy in exchange for my honest review. This is my honest opinion. This is one of the best books I've read this year. ( )

Filled with her trademark banter, crazy plot twists, and dysfunctional characters - I enjoyed Liane Moriarity's latest novel. When the Delaney children discover their mother is missing they don't call the police. After all the father would be the prime suspect and they're sure their mother is alright... wherever she is. The four Delaney children are all adults living their own lives (though not very well) but when they get together it's hard not to act like children competing for their parents love. The family is well known and envied in their corner of Australia, they ran a successful tennis school and all played brilliantly - they even had one of the top tennis players in the world get their start at their little academy. But if everything is so perfect then where is their mother? And why are they trying to hide things from the past. Twisty and interesting. The ending was a little rushed, but it was still another fast paced Moriarity read! ( )

I was thrilled to be approved for an advance listening copy of this book, and also excited to see that the narrator was Caroline Lee, who narrated the other Liane Moriarty books I've listened to previously. She gives the perfect voices to the entire Australian Delaney family and kept me completely invested in the story.

This was a bit long, and the introduction of the Covid pandemic at the end totally unnecessary and jarring, but otherwise I thought it was excellent. I liked all the children of the missing Joy, and the ways tennis had shaped their lives. The structure of the book, with present day sections and sections in the past, worked well and the end was chilling.

Recommended. ( )

The trick to this book is just to forget that it’s by Moriarty. I loved her early books, wasn’t a huge fan of the last two, and enjoyed this one. That being said, this one feels nothing like her early books. It’s a slow meditative look at motherhood and family ties. It’s about how our childhoods shapes us and the delicate line between our memories and adulthood. Recommended with that caveat. Expect a quiet, leisurely read.

“All four of her children each fervently believed in separate versions of their childhood that often didn’t match up with Joy’s memories, or each other’s, for that matter.”

“Any marriage of that many years has multiple motives for murder. Every police officer and hairdresser knows that.” ( )

That was the secret of a happy marriage: step away from the rage.
The point of history is to learn from it, not repeat it.
Amazing to think something beautiful could lie beneath the ugliness and all you had to do was peel it away.
Once you’ve hit a ball there’s no point in watching to see where it’s going. You can’t change its flight path now. You have to think  about your next move. Not what you should have done. What you do now.
So that’s how she lived with it. She did it the way so many people lived with their regrets and mistakes. They simply rewrote their stories.
