Updike's first book is a rather quick and also a little strange. Having read Eastwick, Couples, and his Rabbit books I thought since I like Updike I should read his other books. If you haven't read Updike before don't start with this one. You can tell it's written like a first book and unlike his other books I just couldn't get into the characters, setting, or the story. I really do like the dialogue in this book though. One thing I always liked about Updike is he knows how to write dialogue well. sem críticas | adicionar uma crítica

The hero of John Updike's first novel, published when the author was twenty-six, is ninety-four-year-old John Hook, a dying man who yet refuses to be dominated. His world is a poorhouse--a county home for the aged and infirm--overseen by Stephen Conner, a righteous young man who considers it his duty to know what is best for others. The action of the novel unfolds over a single summer's day, the day of the poorhouse's annual fair, a day of escalating tensions between Conner and the rebellious Hook. Its climax is a contest between progress and tradition, benevolence and pride, reason and faith. Não foram encontradas descrições de bibliotecas. |
