Juvenile Fiction. Juvenile Literature. One girl sets out on a journey across the treacherous Arizona desert to rescue a young pilot stranded after a plane crash in this gripping story of survival, friendship, and rescue from a bestselling and award-winning author. Twelve-year-old Jolene spends every day she can at the library watching her favorite livestream: The Desert Aviator, where twelve-year-old "Addie Earhart" shares her adventures flying an ultralight plane over the desert. While watching this daring girl fly through the sky, Jolene can dream of what it would be like to fly with her, far away from her own troubled home life where her mother struggles with a narcotic addiction. And Addie, who is grieving the loss of her father, finds solace in her online conversations with Jolene, her biggest-and only-fan. Then, one day, it all goes wrong: Addie's engine abruptly stops, and Jolene watches in helpless horror as the ultralight plummets to the ground and the video goes dark. Jolene knows that Addie won't survive long in the extreme summer desert heat. With no one to turn to for help and armed with only a hand-drawn map and a stolen cell phone, it's up to Jolene to find a way to save the Desert Aviator. Packed with adventure and heart, Across the Desert speaks to the resilience, hope, and strength within each of us.… (mais)

Across the Desert is a gripping story of friendship & determination. Readers meet twelve-year old Jolene as she watches her favorite livestream “The Desert Aviator” that captures the real-time aerial adventures of twelve-year old “Addie Earhart”. Suddenly, Addie’s airplane stalls, she falls from the sky and lands somewhere in the scorching hot desert. Jolene, whose mother struggles with opioid addiction, embarks on solo rescue mission to find her only friend. ( )

The emotions of this one far outweighed any niggles of implausibility I may have felt here or there.

Jolene’s story grabbed hold of me from the opening moments where she reminisced about baking car cookies when homeless, describing her hunger in the library and clothes too small for her growing frame. I was so invested in this girl from the jump, so swept up in the difficulty and urgency of her quest to save the only friend she has left and desperate for her to have more certainty in her life.

This is a kid too poor to afford sunscreen in Arizona’s sunshine, a kid whose mom is just barely present, a kid who’s bullied over her clothes and her smile and who far too often experiences a car crash feeling of anxiety inside her. My heart ached over and over for Jolene, but I admired her so much, too, she’s brave and she doesn’t quit and there’s a lot of hope in that and in the good people she meets along the way.

If you’re in the mood for a propulsively entertaining rescue mission, yet you wouldn’t be opposed to shedding some tears as well, this offers a brilliant mix of both. ( )

When 12 year old Jolene is at the library trying to research opioid addiction to help her mom, she sees another girl crash as she livestreams her adventures in the desert flying an ultralight- trike aircraft alone. Realizing she is the only one who knows that this girl Addie has crashed in the middle of nowhere, Jolene tries to get help, but nobody believes her because she is a child. Her own mom is too wrapped up in the cloud caused by her addiction to help. This leads Jolene to gather up the few essentials she can, take the rough map she has drawn of her location, charge a bus ticket on her mom's credit card and head out to look for Addie herself. Luckily she meets an older girl, Marty, who insists on helping her. This is an excellent book on different levels- survival, friendship, strong female characters as well as facing the seemingly hopeless situation of a family member addicted to opioids. grades 4-7 ( )
