From Britannica.com: Author, Temple Grandin, "is an American scientist and industrial designer whose own experience with autism funded her professional work in creating systems to counter stress in certain human and animal populations.

Grandin was unable to talk at age three and exhibited many behavioral problems; she was later diagnosed with autism. Her parents, rejecting a doctor’s advice to place her in an institution, instead sent their daughter to a series of private schools where her high IQ was nurtured. After graduating with a bachelor’s degree (1970) in psychology from Franklin Pierce College (now Franklin Pierce University) in New Hampshire, she earned a master’s degree (1975) and a doctorate (1989) in animal science from Arizona State University and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, respectively. From 1990 she taught animal science at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, where she also managed Grandin Livestock Systems."

Was excited to read this, but the first section, on the history of papermaking (an area I feel passionate about) was so inaccurate that I could not continue. This book has either been dumbed down for children (inappropriate) or is an example of incredibly poor research -- in either case, I am vastly disappointed. ( )

Though, a very basic concept of a science book, how to things work and why do things do what they do. Like how does a kite fly or a boat float, this is a basic book teachers should want and have in every classroom! This is the very way that students learn concepts and develop interests in topics. Allowing them to want to dive deeper and learn more, asking critical thinking questions and seeking out answers themselves. This a great book for all middle grade levels and could tie in with many lessons. ( )
