"In this twisty psychological thriller from the New York Times bestselling author of The Girl Before, an actress plays both sides of a murder investigation. One out-of-work British actress pays the rent on her New York City apartment the only way she can: as a decoy for a firm of divorce lawyers, hired to entrap straying husbands. When the cops begin investigating one of her targets for murdering his wife--and potentially others--they ask her to lure the suspect into a confession. But with the actress pretending to be someone she isn't, differentiating the decoy from the prey becomes impossible--and deadly"--… (mais)

Thank you to Random House Publishing Group - Ballantine for the ARC.
4 stars - well-crafted story, main characters were flawed but fit their roles well. I wouldn't call the narrator unreliable, more like unpredictable which made for a fun read. There was one main event about 75% of the way through that I wish the author spent more time on rather than the swift conclusion that came out of nowhere. Other than that, the twists kept me guessing throughout and I enjoyed the ending. ( )

The writing style took some getting used to but once you become accustomed to that it is an easy flowing read, however it starts off quite a slow burner but once you hit the halfway point the story really takes off and I really couldn’t put it down until i’d finished it. Every time I thought I had worked out which bit was reality it would spin me round another 360 degrees and scratching my head yet again!!

The book was told from the point of view of Claire, an aspiring english actress living in New York. To earn money whilst she is studying she takes on a job working within a law firm honey trapping clients philandering husbands.

And this is where it all goes wrong for her! A client ends up dead and the husband as the prime suspect. Lacking the evidence an elaborate scheme is put into play requiring Claire to use all her acting skills to get close to the husband and secure a confession.

But is that truly what the police believe or are they really looking at Claire herself as the prime suspect and its all been a setup? Who can she really believe and can she even trust herself and her own judgment? Who could be setting her up? Is it her law firm, the husband, an old flame or the police?

There are some great plot twists and each one creating more confusion and more questions than they answer right up until the end of the book.

When I first started reading this I didn’t think I was going to like it and struggled to get involved in Claire’s story but I am so glad I stuck with it as I ended up loving it and it is by far one of the best thrillers so far this year!

I put off reading this for the longest time because the premise didn't sound super intriguing, but being a fan of Delaney's other books, I decided it was worth it. Good call, Ema, good call. This was twisty and confusing and fun, and even though I was trying to guess what the crazy twist would be since I knew it was coming, I was constantly second guessing myself. A bit overly dramatic, but lots of fun. ( )

I'm sad to say this book was disappointing for me. To be fair, it was certainly interesting and I was really hooked through a little more than half of the book---but then it got a little too out there for me. It went from somewhat believable to way over the top and left WAY too many questions unanswered. I hated the ending. The beginning was so exciting trying to figure out what was going on and who the culprit was....then it fell apart. A truly great idea - but just didn't stay together;-( ( )

I just read “Believe Me” by J P Delaney from #NetGalley. This is a great book and you won’t want to put it down. Claire, an orphan and struggling actress, is here from the UK with no green card. That doesn’t stop her from acting as a pick up artist to entrap unsuspecting men. Videotaping them, she gives the evidence to their wives and collects her pay. But does it stop there? One wife ends up dead after Claire failed to pick up her husband. There’s no doubt that a spark lit when Patrick and Claire met, but will it lead to flame? Which one killed her? Or was it a stranger? This book reminds us that our perception is indeed our reality. ( )
