A down-to-earth forensics expert has just discovered a crime scene that is out of this world.

In criminal forensics they train you to uncover evidence, no matter how brutal or bizarre the murder. But what if one night you encounter a crime scene so terrifying that no one on earth can explain it?

It begins deep in the woods of the Pacific Northwest, at the site of a reported shoot-out. Investigator Colin Cellars cannot find a trace of perpetrator or victimâ??or even confirm that anyone has been killed. As he doggedly pursues the case, he realizes there is far more at stake here than murder. Someoneâ??or somethingâ??will stop at nothing to prevent him from discovering the truth. For the truth is not "out there;" it is locked away in Cellars' own evidence file. And the evidence points to a killer far outside Cellars' experienceâ??far outside any earthly experience. But who will believe one maverick cop?

From the New York Times bestselling author of Balefire comes a chilling tale of murder, forensic detection, and vivid speculation that pits a unique crime scene investigator against a culprit who may be unlike any this world ever s… (mais)

The idea of a forensic investigator investigating the presence of aliens I thought was a novel idea. The audio book was a fun experience. There were parts where the forensic criminal investigator seemed in real danger. There were some funny incidents that lightened the dark mood of the book. The water's principal faultless in the actions of the investigator the police and the aliens. None of their actions or motives could stand up to serious examination.> This book is not for serious mystery readers or highbrow science fiction readers. It is a a decent first novel. Its something you would read or listen to while you are waiting to get the book you really want to read from the library ( )

I did enjoy this police-procedural-meets-alien-contact combination; it was well-written and engaging, and really rates more of a 3.5 than just a 3 from me. My only quibble is the level of detail that the author sometimes went into...things were happening, certainly, but sometimes they took a l o n g time to happen. There were also a few questions I had at the end...but overall definitely a good, fun, summer read. ( )

More of a 2.5 than a three. The combination of a CSI and an alien encounter plot is a neat idea, but the CSI agent here seems a bit slow to catch on to what's happening, and the "four friends" aspect seemed forced. Also, in the audiobook it's a little disconcerting that a southern accent seems to come and go, and isn't consistently applied character by character. This is the first of three Colin Cellars books, and there is enough here that I wouldn't mind starting on the next one, but not enough to make me actively seek it out. One last thing - I didn't realize that the story itself dates back to 1999, since the audiobook dates from 2012. So it was a bit disconcerting to hear the mention of Zip drives and modems as being leading edge tech in the police lab! ( )

Entertaining thriller starring a CSI tech against what seems to be an alien invasion. Maybe.

Fairly basic story, mostly focused around the ins and outs of crime scene investigations. And if you are a fan of CSI type stuff, you get a load of it from an author who did it for a career. ( )

The plot: Aliens are involved in the death of a roving CSI's best friend. The friend investigates the death and realizes that something isn't right as pieces of vital evidence are "lost". Can the CSI put the puzzle together without making it appear he's lost both his sanity and professional acumen?

I really wanted this book (and premise) to work, but found it lacking and repetitive. Author (and forensic scientist) Ken Goodard knows his business, but didn't transfer it to the printing word with enough interest for me to continue with the series. ( )
