INSTANT INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLER * NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER * #1 SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER Includes a new introduction The first, epic and true story of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's life together, finally revealing why they chose to pursue a more independent path and the reasons behind their unprecedented decision to step away from their royal lives, from two top royal reporters who have been behind the scenes since the couple first met. Finding Freedom is complete with full color photographs from Harry and Meghan's courtship, wedding, Archie's milestones, and many more unforgettable moments.  When news of the budding romance between a beloved English prince and an American actress broke, it captured the world's attention and sparked an international media frenzy. But while the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have continued to make headlines--from their engagement, wedding, and birth of their son Archie to their unprecedented decision to step back from their royal lives--few know the true story of Harry and Meghan. For the very first time, Finding Freedom goes beyond the headlines to reveal unknown details of Harry and Meghan's life together, dispelling the many rumors and misconceptions that plague the couple on both sides of the pond. As members of the select group of reporters that cover the British Royal Family and their engagements, Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand have witnessed the young couple's lives as few outsiders can. With unique access and written with the participation of those closest to the couple, Finding Freedom is an honest, up-close, and disarming portrait of a confident, influential, and forward-thinking couple who are unafraid to break with tradition, determined to create a new path away from the spotlight, and dedicated to building a humanitarian legacy that will make a profound difference in the world.… (mais)

I pre-ordered an audiobook copy of this book, so I started listening to it the day it was published.

The book was okay, but a bit of a let-down. When the book is being touted as a "tell-all" story, I think one is waiting for the dirt and the low-down, and is disappointed when it appears that royal titles and palatial residences aside, Harry and Meghan are just an ordinary couple who met through friends and fell in love, had a baby, moved to another country. There are no grand disclosures, no secrets raked up from the past. Meghan seems like a really on-the-ball, hard-working woman who has used her determination to build a life that she can enjoy, excel, and wherein she can work for the less fortunate. That the man she met to partner her on her journey is a British prince is just by the way. I liked Scobie's portrayal of her, and I liked that Scobie was spot-on about the misogyny and racism that have driven her out of Britain and back to her old homeland. I've read Daily Mail comments on articles about Meghan - I'd have left too, and more quickly.

So, all in all, not a bad book, but not the scurrilous book I was hoping for. It's better this way. It's good to see that the Duchess isn't a money-grubbing, self-centred control freak: those are the stories belonging to the tabloid media and the clarification is good for everyone to read. ( )

REVIEW:

Book Content:

Finding Freedom is a non-fiction book that tells the story of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle from their meeting (and before) to sometime in 2022.

While I found this to be an interesting and well-researched book, I have to state up front that it is very biased. This is without a doubt a pro-Harry & Meghan book and readers should know that going into it. The authors are clearly very fond of the couple.

Nonetheless, if you read this book with a grain of salt it has a lot of interesting stories and insider information.

Sadly, it doesn’t cover anything after the death of Prince Phillip, which would have been interesting to read.

Audio Narration

This book is narrated by Omid Scobie, one of the authors. He does a very good job and is a pleasure to listen to. I would be lying if I didn’t say that I love his British accent, as well! ( )

I got the electronic version for $1.99, and that’s just about what this book is worth. It’s a generally fawning account of the courtship and marriage of the Duke & Duchess of Sussex and their disengagement from the Royal Family. Read this book with a large salt shaker of salt. If you want a more honest story read The Palace Papers by Tina Brown. ( )
