From critically acclaimed, award-winning author Michelle Huneven, a sharp and funny novel of a congregational search committee, told as a memoir with recipes

/> Dana Potowski is a restaurant critic and food writer and a longtime member of a progressive Unitarian Universalist congregation in Southern California. Just as sheâ??s finishing the book tour for her latest bestseller, Dana is asked to join the church search committee for a new minister. Under pressure to find her next book idea, she agrees, and resolves to secretly pen a memoir, with recipes, about the experience. That memoir, Search, follows the travails of the committee and their candidatesâ??and becomes its own media sensation.
Dana had good material to work with: the committee is a wide-ranging mix of Unitarian Universalist congregants, and their candidates range from a baker and microbrew master/pastor to a reverend who identifies as both a witch and an environmental warrior. Ultimately, the committee faces a stark choice between two very different paths forward for the congregation. Although she may have been ambivalent about joining the committee, Dana finds that she cares deeply about the fate of this institution and she will fight the entire committee, if necessary, to win the day for her side.
This wry and wise tale will speak to anyone who has ever gone searching, and James Beard Awardâ??winning author Michelle Hunevenâ??s food writing and recipes add flavor to the  delightful journey.

Author, restaurant critic, and gardener Dana joins a search committee to find her Unitarian Universalist church's new minister when the current minister, Tom Fox, announces his upcoming retirement. The search committee has a diverse array of people, which soon form into factions along age lines. Dana has agreed to be on the committee partly because she thinks she can get her next book out of it (if she changes all the names and gets permissions for the sermons); it ends up taking a tremendous amount of time and care, and in the end, although they do choose a candidate to hire, she feels the search has failed. Detailed and oddly fascinating.

I did not.
Seventeen, he said, is how many people it takes to instigate a coup in a church. (Tom Fox, 50)

In such a deluge of spiritual thought, I felt charged, inspired to be better, more generous; I felt dilated to beauty and suffering, and grateful for the slant of sunlight, the different greens of leaves... (180)

"This is why consensus is problematic," I said. "Because the intractable activist faction wears everyone else down." (Dana, 308)

If you've ever been on a board/committee or ever worked for a board, you will love this book. I felt like I was a participant and was fully invested in the twists and turns of working with a diverse group toward a "common" end. Will individual wishes take precedence over the task at hand? How will people work (or not) together? What will you learn about yourself? What will be revealed when all is said and done? The first person narrator was a great choice and yes, there are a number of views on religion since the group is selecting a church leader, all of which I enjoyed even though I am not religious. I found the author's choice to write the book as someone else fascinating and effective. Thoroughly enjoyable. ( )
