It's rare these days to hear discussions about God being engaged with in mainstream media, in the workplace, or in social situations. But why should this be? According to Steven Colborne, author of more than a dozen books related to the philosophy of religion, God is just as relevant as ever. Part of the solution to our neglect of God in public discourse, Colborne believes, is to explore and understand how easy it would be to restore language that acknowledges God to the heart of our everyday conversations. This is the motivation behind Colborne's book God Willing. The book's title is inspired by the following Bible passage: Come now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go into such and such a town and spend a year there and trade and make a profit" - yet you do not know what tomorrow will bring. What is your life? For you are a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes. Instead you ought to say, "If the Lord wills, we will live and do this or that." (James 4:13-15) According to Colborne, who is a first-class BA (Hons) graduate with a PG Cert in Philosophy and Religion, nothing can happen outside of the will of God, and there are various ways we might change our use of English to reflect this truth. God Willing contains fourteen short chapters, each one presenting a different reflection related to the language we use and how this might evolve to acknowledge the sovereignty of God and other divine attributes. With real-life examples and an abundance of theological insight, God Willing will both entertain readers and make them think differently about the way they interact with friends, family, and colleagues. After reading the book and engaging with Colborne's arguments, readers will feel equipped to begin restoring God-honouring dialogue to the heart of their everyday conversations. Regarding the prohibition of talking about politics in the workplace, it all boils down to the simple fact that it's capable of destroying any business relationship you might possess with your boss. This is especially true if your political beliefs don't mesh with those of your boss. The milieu of your workplace will become quite caustic, resulting in your failure of receiving a promotion or being delegated duties with fewer responsibilities for your job.
Moving on to the discussion of sex in the workplace, the discussion of this prohibited topic can be the most precarious since workers need to know better and more seriously the possibility of it being considered a form of sexual harassment. For this and other reasons, the best way of dealing with this topic is to distance yourself from any and all discussions.
The main issue regarding the discussion of religion is that it can be like revealing your political party relationship where the opinions of others towards you can change instantly. If you discuss religion in the workplace, beware as it might give the appearance of you badgering or categorizing against a co-worker based solely on their individual religious beliefs. And like sex, this topic can become quite volatile.
In my trying to be a good Christian woman now, while I have no problem sharing the words of the Lord in writing, I have difficulties expressing this speaking face-to-face with another individual in public. I came across this book by author Steven Colborne while searching Amazon for another nonfiction book I could read/review and found it to be an insightful guidebook for individuals like me to be able to speak to others during ordinary everyday conversations.
Through each one of the fourteen short chapters in this book, Mr. Colborne presents to his readers a unique thinking as to the vernacular we utilize in expressing ourselves. And with this knowledge in place, the possibility of it transforming itself in recognizing the dominion of the Lord and other divine characteristics becomes self-evident.
In the end, after reading this book, I’ve begun to feel better equipped to incorporate the words of the Lord when I speak to others in ordinary daily conversations, which is why I’ve given Mr. Colborne the 5 STARS he has garnered from this reviewer of nonfiction Christian books. ( )
