Is suffering salvific? Are all experiences of suffering saving? What is God's attitude and involvement with suffering? In this work, these questions are explored through the lens of Edward Schillebeeckx's later theology which is primarily concerned with the development of a contemporary soteriology. Schillebeeckx's earlier thought on suffering centered almost exclusively on the individual and the personal. This emphasis shifted in his later theology due to a visit to the United States during the social upheaval of the 1960's and his encounters with the Frankfort School of critical theory while teaching hermeneutics at Nijmegen. Rego elucidates this change, beginning with an investigation of his earlier theology, then turning to his appreciation and critique of the hermeneutics of Adorno, Gaedemer and Habermas. He then follows Schillebeeckx's thought on suffering through experience, types of suffering, and finally to Christology, the center of his theology. Dense, erudite and careful, Suffering and Salvation not only provides a more nuanced understanding of Schillebeeckx's view of suffering, but also reflects deeply on the relationship between our current displeasures and our future redemption.
