"Olivia McAfee knows what it feels like to start over. Her picture-perfect life-living in Boston, married to a brilliant cardiothoracic surgeon, raising a beautiful son, Asher-was upended when her husband revealed a darker side. She never imagined she would end up back in her sleepy New Hampshire hometown, living in the house she grew up in, and taking over her father's beekeeping business. Lily Campanello is familiar with do-overs, too. When she and her mom relocate to Adams, New Hampshire, for her final year of high school, they both hope it will be a fresh start. And for just a short while, these new beginnings are exactly what Olivia and Lily need. Their paths cross when Asher falls for the new girl in school, and Lily can't help but fall for him, too. With Ash, she feels happy for the first time. Yet at times, she wonders if she can she trust him completely . . . Then one day, Olivia receives a phone call: Lily is dead, and Asher is being questioned by the police. Olivia is adamant that her son is innocent. But she would be lying if she didn't acknowledge the flashes of his father's temper in him, and as the case against him unfolds, she realizes he's hidden more than he's shared with her"--… (mais)

Mad Honey byJodi Picoult and Jennifer Finney Boylan is challenging to review because the topic is part of the reveal of the book's mystery. This book will elicit strong emotions because of the topic, the age of the individuals, and the fact that the topic is not clear from the description. However, this review is of the characters, the story, and how it's told. The ending of the book is disappointing as the intensity and the education presented is lacking in that solution. It does, however, leave me thinking, and I still look forward what Jodi Picoult will tackle next.

Mad Honey immediately pulls you into a captivating mystery with richly developed characters you can't help but become invested in. Authors Picoult and Boylan weave together dual timelines and perspectives to unravel a heart-wrenching story revealing long-buried family secrets.

The small town of Adams, New Hampshire comes alive through striking descriptions of its tight-knit community and striking natural beauty. You feel transported alongside protagonist Olivia as she balances her responsibilities running the family apiary with raising her son Asher. Their loving yet complicated relationship anchors much of the novel's emotional core.

Woven throughout are fascinating details about beekeeping that offer a unique education. Learning about colony behavior and the healing properties of honey adds refreshing depth beyond just serving as accurate setting details. Like the wings of a bee, you feel yourself buzzing along the intricate plot that masterfully peels back layer upon layer.

Not only is the mystery gripping, but Picoult and Boylan tackle complex issues including domestic violence, sexuality and gender with deep care, empathy and insight. Their ability to handle sensitive topics in a thought-provoking yet compassionate manner is truly remarkable.

By the emotionally-charged finale, you feel deeply invested in these compelling characters' lives, journeys and ultimate truths revealed. Mad Honey is simply unputdownable - getting lost in its pages, I emerged with a fuller heart and mind. This collaboration is sure to become a favorite for fans of both bestselling authors. Highest possible recommendation! ( )

Olivia is a single mother and a beekeeper. Her world is turned upside down when her son Archer is accused of murdering his girlfriend Lily. Lily's and Olivia's lives are told in alternating chapters, from various times before and after Lily's death. Unexpected details about their lives, and Lily's death are revealed. Twists and turns. This was such a good premise, but a little slow. halfway through it referred to a suicide attempt as a “moment of weakness”, which I think is horrifically reductive and offensive. Then I read the spoilers and basically wanted to barf. Not a fan. ( )

This one’s for my other co-author, my brother-from-another-mother, Tom McDonald, who made me fall in love with writing all over again. I’ll work with you over any buggy collaboration program anytime, anywhere, and will lock you in the Writers’ Cage only when strictly necessary.

Susan Finney, my sister-in-law, is a lover of books, stories, red wine, dogs—-and me. Openhearted and generous, she has guided Boylans—-and Finneys—-on many journeys, even when we did not know the way. She’s a sister, a mother, and a grandmother, but above all: an angel.

It would be nice if there were some things you could forget.
He is right; you don’t ever recover from losing someone you love—-even the ones you leave behind because you’re better off without them.
If your only child died, are you even still a mother?
She says, "People always talk about how their love for you is unconditional. Then you reveal your most private self to them, and you find out how many conditions there are in unconditional love."
“Being gay or straight,” says Elizabeth, “is about who you want to go to bed with. Being trans—or cis—is about who you want to go to bed as.”
