At forty, Mary South had a beautiful home, good friends, and a successful career in book publishing. But she couldn't help feeling that she was missing something intangible but essential. So she decided to go looking for it . . . at sea. Six months later she had quit her job, sold the house, and was living aboard a forty-foot, thirty-ton steel trawler she rechristened Bossanova. Despite her total lack of experience, South set out on her maiden voyage--a fifteen-hundred-mile odyssey from Florida to Maine--with her one-man, two-dog crew. But what began as the fulfillment of an idle wish became a crash course in navigating the complicated byways of the self.… (mais)

Enjoyed reading about the author's experience and greatly admire her courage. I expected more emotional depth and self-reflection (rather than simple rehashing of the past) that I assumed would be included in a book with such a promising title. ( )

A good realistic look at what it takes to buy a boat, learn to handle the boat and the first 1000 mile journey. I'd always had this fantasy that it would be great to just buy a sailboat (I'm too frugal to pay for gas) and take off. Mary choose a motored boat as it would be easier to learn. What I learned is that my easy life fantasy would probably get me killed. Thank you Mary you may have saved my life! ( )

Goodwill buy. Good... nice. Trawler knowledge. Glad I read. ( )

The book is amusing and well-written (the career South abandoned was in the book publishing industry, after all) and the first 2/3 of the book is an interesting account of how South threw over one life for another. But the final third of the book, while interesting in a navel-gazing sort of way, leaves the rest of South’s life hanging: in the end, we aren’t sure what is going to happen (will she keep the boat? Sell the boat?) but South assures us the adventure was worth whatever else may come her way. ( )

Add this book to your collection - even land lubbers will enjoy! A must read for arm-chair sailors: Where do I sign up to crew?

Mary South's book weaves a wonderful true story that is filled with adventure, romance, love of the sea, a sense of humor and a journey to find herself. (plus she takes her dogs with her - you have to love that!)

She demonstrates that you and I can really throw off the daily shackles and follow our dreams! You won't be able to put this book down -- and when it ends, you want to write about your own adventure! Its time for me to dip my toes into the ocean!

Buy this book for yourself and give it as a gift to others!
